Dear Folks,
Before I begin, please note that this is not an advertisement (http://www.intosanctuary.com/index.php?topic=4798.0). Arnox, the staff, and I have been having some discussions, and I would like to get some input from you all. I have been thinking about starting a new site. A totse3, of sorts. That is my suggestion.
Some of this stemmed from posts of sentiments from our admin being open to an additional community1. I also noticed some support from a few of you2, which helped propel my decision.
Although Arnox has offered to let me take over The Sanctuary3, a trust for which I am very thankful, I think it would best good to have a new site, a new chance, and a rebirth of a new beginning. Arnox has done a great job in creating The Sanctuary, and he has put up with a lot of crap. This move, if it were to happen, might displace a few people, but I feel that it is a chance to gain back many who have been lost. We lost at least 90% of the totse2 userbase since it went down in October 2013. The darkbb replacement was not good, though it was up until May 2014. We seem to have lost a lot of the Zoklet refugees too.
In case you are wondering what I would do differently, I have scratched up a few points. Of course I would be open to what you all thought, and some things would need to be done differently than before.
- We would be using vBulletin. With vBulletin, we would have content management. That means text-files, blogs, and possibly other add-ons.
- Less over-moderating, and the rules would be a little different. The over-modding part comes down to the banning. There has been a lot of it lately, and there wouldn't necessarily be as much banning.
- HB would be for whatever, as long as not CP or illegal stuff and it fit the site rules, and SG would be more serious discussion that doesn't fall in other forums. Other forums would be for serious discussion.
- NIMF would remain NIMF. It's for things that don't belong. Threads would not be created there.
- We would have more section mods, and less global mods. I would have to make sure we don't have too many mods for the needs. It does sound conflicting to say less over-modding and more section mods, but here is my thinking. With section mods on totse2, I basically told each mod to run their sections how they want, within the scope of the site rules and the description of the section. We always say at work, "run it like you own it." I laid out the site rules, and then allowed them to create their individual forum rules and sticky them. If I didn't agree with a rule, then we would discuss it, but they ran the forum. When people started doing things wrong or abusing their authority, they were de-modded. It created a sense of ownership and accountability.
Most section mods just moved things around and kept things tidy, rather than banning and infracting. After all, we want our users to come here and enjoy themselves, not worry about being kicked off the site. With a different userbase, we might have to make some adjustments, but that's my general thinking.
Some of you may be put off by the name totse3. I like it because we are basically emulating totse, and totse2 went down, so the name makes sense to me, but I'm not married to it. Please vote on whether or not it would be good to have a new site. If the name is lame, please suggest a new one.
The most important thing about any website like this is its community. So this wouldn't be my site. It would be our site.

Actually, believe it or not, I would approve if someone made another totse-like website which passes my inspection and the admin there is actually a good one and further, if the admin actually ASKED before he started advertising on my site. I would even be willing to resign and maybe even give control of this site over to them.
You want 'em? I'll give 'em to you for a bargain deal. And then you can be the one people will call faggot and curse because you may have moved their precious thread over to another sub-forum. Then again, I don't think I'd wish this fate upon my worst enemy.

Idio, I've been watching the comments of you and all the other mods very closely for several weeks in regard to a lot of the forum drama/policies....and I notice you especially choose your words very carefully so as not to upset the applecart. And being one of the more rational/mature people around here, you HAVE to realize there are a few obvious and quick things you could do to bring back some credibility back to these boards......but you aren't talking about it publicly since you are trying to remain loyal to Arnox.
If you think the ship is going down any how, why not at least try to take over the wheel and right things......instead of just going down into the murky depths of the ocean?

Since it bothers you, the advertising policy of The Sanctuary is as follows:
Advertising on here is NOT ALLOWED. My site is not a place to hawk your wares. I'm going to change the rule a little bit temporarily to say that all requests to advertise must now go through me. No exceptions. So I can better keep track of what the heck's going on and who said what.
If you guys feel you can make a better place for the community, that's actually fine and, believe it or not, I encourage it. It would in reality be nice to not have to admin and have to be the guy nobody likes. To pass the responsibility on to someone I can trust. HOWEVER, I will NOT support any shoddily built and/or run websites. If I pass the torch, I want to make sure that it's actually in good hands. This is the way it is now. Vbulletin is better than smf the url sucks and is tainted to the people who left and arnox is not as capable as idio as evidenced by the lack of vision and poor addons and handling of said add ons

My biggest fear is we'd lose more members than we'd gain. Guess I really would prefer to see the problems here discussed and solved than have another site come up. If we're so quick to abandon what we have I'm not sure we'll ever learn to appreciate any of this stuff. The grass is always greener on nonexistent and idealistic websites. Drama like this is all stuff we invent ourselves, and we're never all going to agree on what we want. I feel Arnox has been a good admin. Not perfect, but none of us are. Totse3 sounds like it will have more rules, from the way I've heard everyone talking about totse2. The few complaints against the userbase I've heard have basically been that we're not serious enough, and I feel it's important people know this.
If this happens though, it would probably work well enough. We'd lose some members, maybe become a little more serious; but we'd survive a while longer. The people still left are mostly those that have held on for around a decade already.
Really it would be best if we could fix what we already have, I guess. I'm a little torn on this somehow. If my stepping down as mod would appease everyone and end the talk of finding a new forum I'd be happy to do that. Maybe we should be asking exactly why everyone is unhappy with Sanctuary as it is.

I will say that 2 sites is a bad idea. Splitting the community into unequal halves won't be doing anyone any favors.

it would solve about 90% of the complaints about moderation and the fact that you continue to play dumb about it shows your lack of wanting to actually improve this place

It's pretty simple. Kidiots stay in HB or get permabanned, period. No posting of personal info of members, not even your own, or get permabanned, period. No CP, or get permabanned, period. No editing valid content by staff without genuine justification for it or get demoted, period. No banning unless all other possible avenues have been taken or get demoted, period. No multiple accounts or get permabanned, period (but an IP match or confession is required). No following users around the forum like a sick puppy just to spam them or get permabanned, period. The trouble with this BBS is there's rules, but they are not enforced, or only a halfhearted attempt is made to enforce them.

Look at B&M and the Staff Complaint thread. Look at NIMF. Look at all the fucking failures and people pointing them out over and over again while being ignored.

1 note to be considered about this poll idio is a lot of people who would support this action have already left here or are banned so they can't weigh in but I know of a few from both of those camps looking to come back should something like this happen

Arnox's management is a huge problem here he has consistently bungled things and been dismissive stomped his feet and had to have things his way the way I see it a site owned by him will always have that looming threat of him wanting to assert his control over it
A very easy step for actually showing that anything is actually capable of changing is demodding zek and not having the double standard enforcement of rules continue for him or other posters who aren't critical
Over all I feel like this place has too many negative connotations for people to want to come back to it or join up if they are even tangentially informed on the site
in the end as I've said to you I'm willing to help you as you've proven you are capable at running a site and you are rational and level headed enough to do it properly. This place leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I don't think a fresh coat of paint can truly cover up the blood.

It's exceedingly rare to hear people complain there aren't enough rules or that not enough posters have been banned. Banning someone should only happen when failure to do so will cause more people to leave or the site to shut down (a special case wherein everyone leaves). The rules should be the absolute minimum required for the admin not to get arrested and posters to be able to have a discussion. You should also start with someone who's technically competent and give them the tools to do what they need to. Modding aldra was a good move but you can't do much with shared hosting, find someone technically inclined and give them the keys.
Also for the love of god don't call anything totse 3. I will never sign up for a site called totse with any number on the end

the too sides is instead of just moderating the serious discussions in a reasonable manner like just deleting posts that are off topic or moving off topic threads you go ban happy not to mention most of the problems people bring up are with your moderation of NOT serious threads and sections like people getting banned in bitch and moan and half baked while you have wild double standards for a majority of the users
people aren't asking for Strict or no moderation they are asking for GOOD moderation and a willingness to work with the users and posters

The issue had already been handled by idio. Your bungling of the situation (A DAY LATER I might add) after idio had already resolved any perceived issue did nothing but alienate users and undermine a moderator's actions that were successful and fair. All because you wanted to get rid of 2 users for "leeching" off your site, then having the balls to tell users where they could go.

I support Idio as an administrator. I have no personal qualm with Arnox, but I do not agree with some of the choices he's made in governing the site and feel that Idio is both more experienced as a site owner/manager, and is more in tune with the userbase.
What I might suggest, in order to avoid decimating the userbase and carving Arnox out of the site he's put up and paid for so far, is to remain here - Arnox would take control of long-term strategy, changes, new features etc. while Idio can handle management of the site, day-to-day administration, management of moderators and the like.

I've been racking my brain for a suitable name if something were to come to fruition. Nothing is sticking yet, but I would be up for suggestions.

It's too bad ROTSE.COM is taken. It could be "Return of the Screaming Electron", named after the third Star Wars movie, "Return of the Jedi".

IMO the old posts and the layout are of little importance if the alternative is a fresh new site anyway, but I was just thinking that reopening totse2 with one of the original domains would be a slightly better start than a new name.

Maybe think of what the general purpose of the site would be (freedom of speech?) and work from there for a name. Or maybe pick a sort of funny and endearing name that gives a sense of unity, like Degenerate Slackers or something.

Below was our welcome screen on totse2 - not that it will remain the same, but just an idea.

I don't think you understand. Let's take the banning of fanglekai for an example situation analysis. I moderated in the way I felt appropriate. I saw that he was spamming his site. In my opinion, I would have allowed him to post his site in one thread in IFIOTW. That's where links and stuff you find on the web goes, so it makes sense, plus a couple other reasons. I didn't like his spamming, so I sent him a PM. I said that it was my only warning and that I would ban him if he spammed again. He responded back in compliance and said he would stop spamming and restrict his posts to the thread as I requested. All was gravy, and it was done without an infraction or a ban.
Well, my call was overruled. That happens from time to time when the administration wants to enforce a rule. Fang is banned, and his site links were removed for the most part. So you're suggesting that I unban fang on moral principle. What will that solve in the long-term? Arnox would log in, reverse my reversal and ban fang, likely demod me, and there would be more damage done than help. By complying with direct orders that a superior gives you, you can remain on staff, and still advise your superior in an appropriate setting. More long-term results can come from this than what you are suggesting. I'm not sure what jobs you've held in the past, but doing what you suggest can get you on the short list real fast, and then the chance of change of zero.
It's fine if the staff has a strong difference of opinion, but it needs to be handled right. That is why you were removed as a mod. When you say, "nobody should "work with" any staff member who insists on handing out bad bans," are you implying that I should quit or force my termination if I disagree with something? By exercising my physical capability that you noted, it would only be a short-term solution. Please tell me you can see this.

And for the record, I was never removed as mod at any BBS anywhere. Ever. If you're talking about Zoklet, I resigned. I wasn't removed. And the reason I resigned is because zok made a policy that if any of the staff were to speak their mind in public to criticize the administration, they would be reprimanded. So I told him to go fuck himself, wrote out my resignation, then quit on principle. I modded four major forums on Zoklet, and quite successfully, I might add. Even zok and wires and some of their lackeys had to admit that. My quitting the staff was a definite blow to his operation, which was what my resignation was intended to do.

I guess I just have difficulty putting myself in that kind of frame of mind. I come from the age where the mindset was Stand Your Ground. It was completely irrelevant that there was another place to go, or that we could start something else, or that we could just ignore the situation. Those weren't options for us in those days. But in this "advanced"/"modern" age of the WWW, it's more of a passive kind of thing, where everyone just goes along to get along, or just goes somewhere else if they find an improper situation. My age of doing things would call that laying down in the road, rolling over, and so forth. The thought of running or rolling over never crossed our minds in those days. But I guess we're way past those days now, huh? Things sure have changed, but in my opinion, not for the better.

Also, helladamleet's ban was frivolous and completely unnecessary bullshit. Helladamleet has been a member of this community for a very long time, and certainly never deserved an off-the-cuff ban. If someone had merely discussed it with him, I'm absolutely sure there would have been no need to ban him. It's these frivolous bans without any other due diligence, and the bullshit/excuses that goes with, which empties a community fast. Banning should always be a last resort. People just simply don't try hard enough to resolve a situation.

I haven't given up, I have a different outlook where petty crime and long prison sentences aren't quite my forte. The monotonous "trolling" and incoherent babbling, the site drama that you all need so desperately, I need that no longer. The majority of site traffic will be from BI just as it was on Zoklet and the same mentality will arrive with those imbeciles.

I don't even know if such a thing really exists, because in my experience those places allow mostly free expression and petty quarrels too. You should see the vegan and paleo crowds go at it; that shit is intense. But other places really seem to have more open-minded posters. Kinda strange to me that so many people attracted to the ideals of free expression and speech are determined not to let their beliefs be challenged by outside forces. Guess maybe I'm the last person who should be passing judgment for that.

Nah. Sub-reddits just don't have enough to really manage a userbase with a really encompassing goal like freedom of speech and information. Also, we'd kind of always be in the shadow of Reddit itself and our name would be attached to that site although I guess some people may not care.

To be quite fair, Idio's got vBulletin which definitely is better than our SMF nonsense we have here or any other free forum software that Avoyel/LLZ/fang's site uses. (although right now, the SMF software installed here is modded to hell and back so it's actually running fairly decently now.)
