The reason for this is that we do not need over 9000 threads complaining about equanimity being made a mod or over 9000 threads talking about my supposed incompetence or etc. Too many of these threads just clog up the Recent Topics list and are repetitive almost to the point of spam.
EDIT: Since SMF is being really stupid, I can't merge older topics than this without the older topics taking over as the OP. So, we're starting anew.
