Not really into MMO's so I can't comment on them. But... Super Mario 64 is one of those breakthrough games, but you aren't missing much if you don't like platformers and/or can't play it on an actual N64. Metal Gear Solid is entirely another story, if you can stomach the ancient graphics of the original it's totally worth it. Top notch presentation, story, gameplay. Sometimes the dialog drags on a bit. MGS2 had even better gameplay, but the story got extra-convoluted and plain silly. MGS3... is a masterpiece. Try subsistence to get the full camera control, it makes a big difference - though still a bit tricky to control, it's just about perfect once you get the hang of it. imo the best of the lot. Unfortunately I don't know about all the recent games.

Half Life... it's technically an FPS, but the original was pretty groundbreaking because it melded the story seamlessly with the gameplay. There are no cut scenes, nor are there arbitrary level divisions. It's basically one long adventure, you play a scientist at the epicenter of a major disaster and you have to escape the massive research facility. You could watch play-throughs of it on youtube to get a look at what it's all about, but really playing it is the only way to understand it's brilliance. To explain the whole plot and how it's presented would be a page stretcher.

The sequel is just as good, though a bit different in a couple ways. The sequel has actual characters important to the plot, so you can't just go killing everyone and carry on your merry little way. But the story becomes quite engrossing, the graphics are still quite good despite it's age, the hyper-realistic (cough) physics make for some interesting gameplay. There are a couple of vehicle sections as well.

Really good to know!  No idea how we managed to not have Super Mario 64.  Had all the other big titles for that console.  Still have it too, so maybe I should look for a copy?  Half Life and MGS... good info, thanks.  I'm not really into shooters though.  Probably why I've never played those ones lol.

A nerd like you, never played D&D?  You gotta be shitting me

And surprisingly I've never played a MUD.

Who are you calling a nerd? :suspect:

Is that your favorite MUD?

all devil may cry i play 10 mins at a friends once that about it portal that another assasins creed is another to be honest i go for games that have a guy with an RPG on the cover :)

I've never played an Assassin's Creed game either, but I watched somebody playing Assassin's Creed 3 recently and it actually pushed me to buy a copy. I'd been filtering this series out due to it's huge dudebro following and being published by Ubisoft, but from what I saw I'd say the games are definitely worth a punt preowned.

Yeah microsoft gave number 2 away for free on the Xbox and I actually enjoyed it

Having an Xbox 360 kinda limits me to games that are PS3 exclusives

Is that your favorite MUD?

I have played a lot of games, I went into my history with games in the retardeded thread...this may sound retarded as fuck, but that game is the only game I have ever played that gave me actual adrenaline rushes...it is so competitive, and the penalties for dying so harsh, that my hands would actually shake when I would engage in pk...

I quit playing though because I mobdied and lost like 1,000,000 xp and tons of eq, got pissed and said 'fuck it'.

Hah.  You ragequit like a bitch just for losing months of work?  People like you are why modern MMOs suck (kinda joking here).

Man that game sounds perfect.  Maybe I'll check it out...

yes, it is like the 10th time I quit.

by the way, note that it took me a year to learn how to properly even play that game...the learning curve is immense

MGS is the biggie. There are a fair number of PS3 exclusives that got good reviews and I want to play but I don't think anything last-gen counts as a classic. I'm tempted to try the PC port of MGS because emulation is a drag and I don't know if I own a playstation anymore. Has anyone played it? Thoughts?

IMO anything after ps1/n64/dreamcast is not classic yet.

What's this about MUDs? There was a period where my internet connection was so shit that MUDs were the only online game I could play reasonably. My two favorites were DartMUD and Elysium. Dart because it's system was so immersive, it's funny how just taking out the numbers makes the experience feel a lot less mechanical. Elysium because when I was playing it was pretty active and the admins did a really good job in cultivating roleplay.

I have only really played WotMUD, but I will look into those. :)
