Classic games you haven't played
« on: July 03, 2014, 09:33:55 pm »
I was watching some old Zero Punctuation reviews yesterday and in his review of the Ocarina of Time remake for the 3DS, Yahtzee confesses that he never played OoT on the N64, which for a game critic is like a music critic saying he's never listened to Sgt. Pepper's or OK Computer. This got me thinking about hyped games and franchises I still haven't got round to playing.

For a start, I've never played a Super Smash Bros game, which is strange because I played my N64 til the wheels came off back when the series started and used to play lots of multiplayer games with my brothers and friends. SSB should've been an obvious buy but I never paid it any attention. Even now I own every nintendo home console from the snes to the Wii (not including the virtual boy :P), there has always been something further up on my buy list.

Another series I've never touched is Elder Scrolls. In recent years my attitude towards high fantasy has gone from hatred to indifference which probably explains a lot, but now I have Skyrim in my backlog (bought it for pennies in a charity shop) perhaps I'll get around to seeing what the fuss is about.

Half-Life 1/2 (My brother had this for a while so I could have played it any time back then but I was too busy jerking off to Unreal Tournament and the like.)
Final Fantasy

Think that's about it.

I've never played an Assassin's Creed game either, but I watched somebody playing Assassin's Creed 3 recently and it actually pushed me to buy a copy. I'd been filtering this series out due to it's huge dudebro following and being published by Ubisoft, but from what I saw I'd say the games are definitely worth a punt preowned.

You're missing out. I myself, hadn't played either until about a year ago. Finally, I got Steam and gave them a whirl. Man, were they a blast.

Heh, I started playing the first Half-Life again last night, my personal favorite fps.  In answer to the question, I've played every classic game.  Ever.

Super Mario RPG. Couldn't get it to work on emulator (but didn't try very hard honestly). Is it worth it?

OP should get SSB:Melee, definitely the best one.

Also anyone who hasn't played tetris attack should try it. It looks gay but it's actually really fun

Super Mario RPG was fun, the emulator issue probably had to do with Mode7 being enabled/disabled, which was a graphics mode on the SNES that a bunch of games used.

The game probably wouldn't keep the 2014 gamer interested for long, and I remember the minigames always pissing me off.

As far as classic games, I'd recommed Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters, the best version was for the Panasonic 3DO, and its now free to download here: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php

Its an open-ended space exploration game and a lot of fun.

Also Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 for the PC are personal favorites of mine.

Portal and Portal 2, guess you could call them classics, they got enough good reviews and so on. Been sitting on my hard drive for a couple of years but never in the mood to play them.

Almost any console game that wasn't released on N64 I have never played, but can't say I'm really bothered.
