i heard a lot of woman studies classes are actually fun. it depends on the proff, usually they're awesome and teach a bunch of stuff people wouldn't usually know about. if you get a lame proff, then the class will be lame. once had to take a woman's lit class and it was GAI.

I know and I do have an open mind, but I don't want to get brainwashed. Based on some pictures I've seen on the internet I'm preparing for the worst. I also just flat out don't care or want to be sensitive to all these made up genders. I think it can all be explained by the combination of male and female energy, but saying that probably won't put me in good favor because people like to believe they can make up new genders. Like the title says, I just want to survive with my sanity intact. I'm not a hateful person so that is a plus.

I'll update whether its good, bad, or lulzy. Though I definitely won't be trolling anyone, that's disrespectful and I care about my grade.

You're going into this with a poor attitude.  Before even glancing at the syllabus you were decided in calling it all airy bullshit.  There's no rational reason for such cynicism this early in the game.

We tend to find what we're looking for, because we're wired to keep ourselves comfortable in our understandings of the world.  So if you look for bullshit you'll find it, and then you'll be reassured of your opinions.  It's sort of a smug exercise in futility, which sucks 'cause you're being presented with opportunities for growth.

And everyone saying you have to agree with everything prof. says to get an A is being silly.  You kinda have to be braindead in order to make less than As in women's studies coursework.  The way your class is set up sounds awesome.  Writing, group participation, probably interesting discussion... all with a small group.

*sigh*

I miss being liberal arts major.  Shame the money's elsewhere.

Except you do have to respond to opinions within the scope of what the prof wants. I also made this post after we had gone over what the class was about, don't assume that I instantly have a bad attitude. I find it interesting, people like fuck have shown me that sexuality drives EVERYTHING. But not in the scope that we will be going into. I think chinese philosophers nailed it, then modern academics and psychologists came along and started making up words fucking around with things that can already be explained by chinese philosophy. One of the first articles was about white privilege and male privilege - the majority of the article just being a list of privileges. Confirming all of my suspicions that we will be heading towards airy bullshit.

I have had my share of liberal arts classes and enjoyed most of them, but I'm afraid this is going to be a whole new beast - it is completely different than your average philosophy course. And more and more I believe the whole deal is amounting to no more than thought control. Don't assume I'm close minded because I want to do well and retain my sanity.

So the concepts of male/white privileges have no basis in reality?  What makes them airy bullshit, specifically?

I'm not calling you wrong, just hoping you move beyond the vague generalities.  You're given free space here to share your thoughts.  So do it imo.

They're airy bullshit because they don't exist. I don't get every job I apply for magically because I'm a white male. Actually I have more obstacles for getting scholarships and grants simply by being white and male. I've seen countless scholarships for females in the sciences, females doing other shit, etc......despite females outnumbering males in universities throughout the USA.......like that makes any sense.

Let's talk about female privilege instead.

It's definitely a multifaceted issue, and you're probably not wrong about it being harder for you to get a scholarship because you're white male.  But that's just one piece of the greater whole, and it's interesting that while more women are graduating with science degrees the field is still largely dominated by men.  Plus, y'know... women are still being paid less for doing the same jobs.  Generally speaking ;)

Don't know how to multi quote.. so..

It is a 15 person class with group work and participation expected so I can't just zone out and snooze (I usually try and take advantage of bullshit like this to work on breathing exercises though). It is supposed to be a writing class with the gender theme, so we will have to read and critique other peoples work.

FON, thats is how it is supposed to work in theory, but it doesn't go down like that in the real world. LIke I said it is impossible just because of the institution. A site like this allows open discussion because all opinions are granted the same weight. This is not the case when your work is submitted to grading by a professor - who will let their own opinions and biases influence how they grade. It is human nature and not limited to womens studies, but given the totally subjective nature of the topic - the whole thing is opinion. A lot of times a class will be centered around an opinion, that while it is an opinion, is to be treated as fact and not open for debate. Of course then all that is left is to regurgitate information while putting your own personal spin on it, but without thinking too far outside the box. And that is a liberal arts education in a nutshell.

On the other hand it could be interesting, hopefully I can write about things like robosexuality. And other things that are probably more provocative than these so called open minded people intended.

Sure, professors always have biases, but if you feel that the bias has significantly affected your mark then you don't have to roll over and accept it - at least not in Australia anyway. When I've felt a solid piece of work hasn't received an appropriate grade and the feedback left by the marker was inadequate I've been able to consult with other professors, explain my issues and have it marked again. Last time I did this it jumped from a Credit+ to a High Distinction.

The beauty of white male privilege is that it goes mainly unnoticed by white males.

Cite specific examples of women being paid less for doing "the same work". Every stat I've ever seen has shown bullshit aggregate numbers instead of concrete examples of man makes x at job A while woman makes <x at job A. There are many reasons why women tend to choose lower paying jobs. I have yet to see Wendy's pay a woman less than a man for running a cash register...

They have a limited basis in reality. The whole notion of white privilege seems to completely ignore the fact that there are plenty of places where white people are poor and stuck in a broken system the same as their black and hispanic and whatever else fellows. My problem with the concept is that it describes the problem, says that the individual can't just make up for it by not discriminating, but without prescribing a solution. It is nothing more than a divide and conquer tactic that plays on the concept of white guilt. Again no solution is prescribed meaning nothing that big bad white man can do will will take away his privilege. While I agree that shit is and has been fucked. I am not responsible for the actions of my fathers. I don't shit on german people because of hitler, nor do I shit on russians because of stalin, etc. By the white guilt logic germans should be indebted to the jews.

The concept and people who tout it seem to forget that not everyone lives in a nice suburban villages. That poverty affects all races and genders. You don't walk into an engineering firm and say "I'm a man, where is my job?" Rather like everyone else you start from the bottom and work up, unless you are one of the few who was born with connections. The funny thing about connections is they don't know racial boundaries either. Further everyone is born with advantages and disadvantages. Should I feel white guilt because snoop dogg is highly successful because of the culture created by the media. Same with 2 chainz and Wacka Flocka, I am so sorry that they have to suffer racial stereotypes of black men solely for profit and personal gain.

And lets not forget that their are two sides to every coin: Is it my male privilege that I have to take out the garbage out at work and that females will rarely do that task? I am not big nor strong, but that is the task that is required of me and so I do it. Going back to the divide and conquer everyone is in the same boat, upper class through poor, we are just pawns to the elite. The more self hate they can generate the more efficient it seems they can accomplish their goals. It is not and never a civil rights issue. People love talking about fergusson these days, but I've never once heard someone in real life mention the several incidents of new mexico police raping individuals (by definition). I don't blame them for not knowing, but the media has an agenda, and stories like those don't fit so well - even though they should draw equal outrage.

I treat everyone with the same amount of respect and fuck anyone who says that isn't enough because that is all we have to do as humans to create a positive change.
