Imagine an entire exoskeleton with that feature, strapped in an omni treadmill or something even better that's developed, and particularly this within the exoskeleton: A rapidly expandable and inflatable structure that could quickly change shape to any object and arranged itself based on your highly accurately tracked motions. The top layer would be specialized for the ability to replicate textures, possibly to the point where it could even spike outward enough, or use a deployment mechanism to reproduce fur, hair, or other objects, while the underlying would have the ability to harden to the point where it could even feel like a wall, along with the help of the exoskeleton. Then with ultra high resolution 3D scanning (you could do this with models/porn stars), ultra-high-fidelity quality 3D audio, and high quality voice production like Hatsune Miku or recordings from real people, maybe a much more advanced chatbot like program that realistically replicate human conversation, or just for certain scenarios (sex), and additional attachments like a high quality fleshlight sex machine that could be integrated for movement (riding). You could even add a temperature feature for greater realism, and wind system, eventually even scent if the ability to recreate most accurately becomes available. Sex would become obsolete.

Real life will soon be obsolete, and I am thankful for that. This world can go to hell, I hope to one day live inside virtual reality all my life. Imagine a portable device with an ultra high definition 3D camera which then processed the image within an acceptable timeframe (very low .x at a minimum). You could change the way the entire world look, while still being able to safely travel in it. Even if you had to go outside, everything could be beautiful. Same for the audio, you could block out things you didn't want to hear, like traffic, or people insulting you, and replace it with something better, even change people's voices while still receiving the same information.

There are many problems with workable VR, and all the technologies needed for a proper immersive experience that avoids vertigo and has realistic visual effects genuinely haven't been available until recently. Reading about the latest Crescent Bay prototype and the features they're considering in the consumer version, along with the confirmed and planned superior aspects, it's clear that this is going to happen. The low planned price point, strong psychological impact from such a radically different experience than the norm, and word of mouth will likely drive sufficient sales. The large capital available from Facebook and that will incrementally become more available from financiers and entrepreneurs could well lead to a scenario where a truly immersive experience can be attained.

The hand exoskeleton thing would be cool as an input device beyond just simulating the tactile experience of grip. Like just as a peripheral for general computing. Like I bet it'd be pretty easy to tell the difference between gesturing and regular typing, you could turn any surface into keyboard with adjustable tactile response as well a touch interface. Maybe one of the less imaginative uses but immediately useful. I spend a lot of time switching between a keyboard and a pointing device in a day, if you can cut 200ms out of that switch time an office worker would probably end up saving an hour a week.
