I'm here today to talk about something that's been on my mind.
Recently I've had an influx of people that have found my humor and sarcasm... "distasteful" No. not only distasteful, but they take it as a personal stab at them. Yes, they take it PERSONALLY.
For example, in class today, a friend and I were joking around on deviantart laughing at some really BAD art, like 3 yr. old skill level. I mentioned that he should just comment on the page "ur bad, kill urself" in which would be hilarious. He thought it was funny, but the girl in front took personal offense and made a huge point of saying how insensitive and NOT funny suicide jokes are. She got pretty upset about it.
Now, really? Let me tell you why a suicide joke is funny. It's funny because instead of being critical of someone's artwork, and saying "you could have used blue in this area blah blah blah", you instead offer a completely wild and unhelpful solution - to kill themselves. It catches them off-guard. Everyone knows they aren't ACTUALLY going to go take out a gun and shoot themselves in the head. No, it's a malicious joke. It doesn't mean anything. It's supposed to make you laugh because of how "out of the ordinary" it is.
Now that I've cleared up WHY a suicide JOKE is funny, why is it that so many people get their panties in a wad over it? There's a couple of reasons.
Some people just have a stick up their ass. They can't comprehend anything to be funny except knock-knock jokes, and even most of those offend them somehow.
Some people just want to stand up for a cause, and are looking for every opportunity to do it. (Anyone remember the gay rights protests over the rainbow colored Oreo cookies???)
Some people think that because you're making light of a heavy situation, that you don't care about the situation. No, I care about suicide. Someone who kills themselves leaves a gaping hole in friends and loved ones, not to mention their own head (maybe uncalled for?) and it is sad when someone is suffering from depression.
HOWEVER... that's not what the joke is aimed at. The joke is aimed at absolutely nothing, aside from tickling your mind because of the wild nature of it. So don't take it personally. It's not aimed at YOU. It's fine if you disagree. But to get offended? Please. Remove the tampon from your ass and shut the fuck up. You're perfectly fine.
Oh one last thing: you might say, "people who have had friends or family that have committed suicide have a reason to get hurt over a joke of that nature."
Yeah? Where do you think the phrase "laughter is the best medicine" came from? That really sucks that your friend killed him/herself because of whatever circumstances, but do you really think that the world is going to bend over backwards to make accommodations for your bad experiences for the rest of your life? No. So please, for the love of God, get over a humorous comment.
