Right, friends. I need some help for a project.
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:36:35 pm »
As you may, or may not know, I am automating my house. My next project is to automate my blinds to remote control them. This is the part of my blind that will open/close them. I need to motor that is controlled by a remote control that will spin one way when I want to open them, and spin the other when I want to close them, what would I need.  As you can see I can remove the pole as it won't be needed once this thing is installed.

Yeah, bud, but I don't know how to go about it to make it controlled by a remote and install it around that latch.

I'm benzo'd and can barely see bit I think you should place the motor inside that thing.

For remotes, use stuff from RC helicopters.

I'll look at this tomorrow.

First thing you're going to need to do is reinforce the support because the weight of a motor along with its torque is going to rip that thing out of the wall

There are super small and light quadrocopter motors on the market. They are the size of a fingertip but still pretty powerful.

Really? It only has to turn that latch (thankfully) not pull it.

second picture, upper left corner

that square 'box' has a cover over it holding the shade in place.  the weight of the shade assembly, along with any movement forces from opening/closing/yanking on the shade are on that box.  that box is held is by very small and insignificant screws in the majority of times.  you could take it apart and have a look-see to find out what youre working with.

if the screws are decent sizes and in sufficient quantity, and they penetrate through the drywall into something sturdier than drywall, youre good to go.  if the screws are undersized or held in place only into drywall, theyre going to fall out at some point with or without a motor.  i dont know what type of motor you had in mind but all the ones i know of that are capable of producing the torque necessary to manipulate those blinds are heavy enough to bring the weight capacity specs of those brackets beyond their ability.

Just a thought, if you use a stepper motor, you could program the controller for increments, full open, full closed, various degrees of partially open...
I'll try anything once, and twice to be sure.

All you need is the servos from split ac units vents...its already controlled by remote to

OP doesn't post anymore, but for a project like this you'd be better off with steppers than servos (constant rotation + he'll want to start/stop at set increments). I got a bucketload of them for cheap off ebay a few months back. if it's only a few, you can use an arduino with a motor shield to control them, otherwise you'll need some cheap driver boards.
