De-Googling
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:32:57 am »
Originally intended to mean from android, but in day to day life too:

I saw a 4chan thread way back about everything to do. Besides ditching playstore, using a custom rom, disabling location data, what else should I do? I still have google accounts that I use. I just realized that google keeps track of my search history for the current account on any device. Eg. All my firefox searches on arch linux are logged because I was also logged into my google account. Also locations are saved, I think only on my android device, but probably more than I realize. Switch to duck duck go. I already refuse to save passwords in browser. What else can I do? Browser fingerprinting is obviously a problem.

It has nothing to do with the devices. It has to do with the services you connect to.

Use a proxy server for ALL internet traffic, if your really paranoid like me, use at least 2 or more. It would be best if you setup your proxy server. It does much at all to do that, I have 2 raspberry pi's for proxy servers. Their cheap, use very little power, and did I mention their cheap.

Yeah it does have to do with the devices. If you stop using shit then you aren't going to be traceable. Off the grid man.

A device is just a means of using a service. It isn't inherently good or bad, I don't have to connect to the internet - I could make my own internet, etc. This isn't about being untraceable or doing sketchy illegal shit. It is about minimizing the data I give to a conglomerate in the data business. Google fucking knows who I am, facebook fucking knows who I am, even fucking yahoo and microsoft probably have a good idea too. Why would I continue providing them with my data when I have other options? Right now I am providing minimal data: only my ip address and this post - which isn't being run through an algorithm or being used to sell me goods (at least on the surface). Facebook doesn't lie about what they do and I have no ill feelings towards them, just the opposite actually. My ill feelings are towards the people who think that internet privacy is some sort of inherent right, that it deserves nothing more than an afterthought. They are getting fucked and fuck 'em.

I am using linux now any services I connect to are my own undoing. I can use ARM linux on my tablet and I don't own a smart phone. I also have a custom rom on my tablet, but that is a bit too tied in with google for me. Thread is about degoogling. Eg. Is there a thunderbird for android? Alternative market places? etc. Go figure though I've probably just wasted my time here.

But you still have to integrate with society which uses google and necessitates you do as well. I have to use it for school for email at the very least and google drive unless I want to be an asshole and refuse to use it - likely negatively impacting my grade. I am more interested in discussing how to strike a balance between privacy and convenience than becoming anonymous. I could go through 10 proxies, but it doesn't matter when I log into rusty@gmail.com. Likewise using proxies to commit online crime is laughable.

I am curious how you create your own proxies. Surely your are still associated with the internet traffic unless you either have them as a backdoor to someone elses isp?

Lolwat? Are these raspis off site or are you literally bouncing data around a local network and calling it a proxy?

My raspberry pis are my VPN servers and they connect to the proxies. I have the proxies off site, my IP is never seen just the IP of the proxies. Like I said really paranoid.

You have 2 options.

1. Go off the grid.
2. Spread disinformation.

there is only one thing to keep in mind when it comes to internet anonymity:

it does not exist
