As above. Lifting is probably the best thing you can do for yourself.

Well no its not, lifting is an easy was to injure yourself there are plenty of other core exercises that can be used together and give a better result, but this depends on body type and body type determines the type of exercise regiment you should be doing.

It seems in order to just do a basic workout routine, I have to do at the very least 6 different kinds of exercise. Are there other kinds of exercise that I could do that take the place of two or more?

Excercise science teaches 4 types are needed for a balanced workout. Endurance, Strength/Resistance, Balance and Flexibility. So the ultimate cougar hunting spot like Yoga or Pilates mixes flexibility and balance.

Actually, I was talking more along the lines of push-ups, sit-ups, and that sort of thing.

Thats a different story. Depending on your goal I could give a couple ideas.

Honestly, nothing too strenuous. Just looking for a way to get a normal workout using as few kinds of exercise as possible.

I prefer rock climbing and suspension training. They are both excellent all body workouts, particularly for core strength, and I don't get bored to fucking tears as I do when lifting weights.

fuk yeahhh, i was gunna say similar. bouldering, mountain biking, and walking/jogging w/ my dog is the best stuff ever. when i see the beefy gym guys at the rock walls it's hilarious b/c all the stuff they've been doing is sooo useless. they sweat and can't even hold themselves. i've taken guy friends out on rides and climbs and they suffer each time, pretty funny to see lol.

Had a friend who was into competitiive martial arts. Said every now and again some 'muscled Mary' would walk into the martial arts centre thinking he'd fuck everyone up because he weighed something like 250lbs+. They'd soon learn the error of their ways after 2 3-minute rounds in the ring when a combination of infexibility lack of high-intensity cardio and flailing around 60lbs of excess muscle meant they where having trouble breathing let alone fighting.

I thought he was bullshitting until he showed me a video of an intra-club fight. Must've been close to an 80lbs discrepancy between the two fighters (~ 160 vs. 240 lbs. I was shocked. The club owner was Chinese born. Had a different view on what constituted a fair fight). The lighter fighter looked in very good condition, the much heavier fighter clearly had a lot more muscle but with 30lbs or so of excess fat. Still, the match-up was valid, because halfway through the third round heavier man ripped off his headguard and conceded the fight. He'd spent the last 2 1/2 rounds throwing easily-dodged haymakers and getting peppered with clean shots in return. At the end of it he was bruised and completely gassed. The other guy looked fine!

So I asked the classic 'do they lift?' question. He said yes; but the heavy guy did it to bulk out, i.e. eating a lot of food and not caring about gaining excess weight. The other guy kept his diet clean and consumed only what he needed to build hard, dense muscle. Which made sense because the fight looked bit like a contest between a piece of iron and an angry water bag.

Arnox, i would suggest something similar to starting strength.  In total its 5  different excercises, but each workout day your   performing 3 workouts.

I used to rock climb and row competitively, injuries forced me to quit. Tried lifting, which bored me to death, moved on to swimming which is just fine for me. Just you and the water for a good hour or two. I have a gripboard mounted above my office door, colleagues are used to seeing me do L-hangs and pull-ups while on conference call by now.

I was in a rope pulling team for half a year too, greatest workout for my legs and back (climbing gave me awesome grip strength), also never been so sore in my life. Two teams of five guys in ski boots, pulling inch by inch in unison, exhausted after a few minutes.

Lifting is a giant waste of time in my opinion. If you have a demanding physical job, simply doing that job should be more than enough training. If you don't, you're much better off with something that doesn't shorten your muscles and doesn't improve your cardio. Most gym-going guys I know hardly improve their functional strength, too, they're just in it to look bigger. Which is fucking hilarious, nothing screams insecure like guys trying to look big. If that's your goal, lifting and juicing would be your best bet. For any other benefits, I'd say try a sport or two.

Ask your doctor if your heart is healthy enough for sex.

I do mostly body weight exercises and cardio.  I also use 5lb dumbbells and a 6lb medicine ball.  I'm trying to join a gym once I get some moolah, but that's mostly for the spa/sauna/pool and they got heavy bags.  I'll probably do some light weight/high rep weights as well.

I'm trying to get super lean and ripped.  Not interested at all in getting big.  Couldn't afford the food necessary to get big even if I wanted too ;)  I live off mostly rice and eggs.
