How to survive a womens studies class?
« on: September 03, 2014, 03:35:31 am »
Aight so I gotta take a womens studies class. It fulfils some requirements I need to graduate, that will hopefully be next year so I can't just put it off and look for a better class. It is about gender so that is a little more neutral, but I just know I'm going to get a bunch of crazy ideologies shoved up my ass whether I like it or not. I'm good at writing what people want to hear so that part is fine, but how to maintain my sanity. Seriously. I've come to the conclusion that modern college is nothing more than a brainwashing sham. The very nature of the institution cannot foster critical thinking because the student will always be trying to give the answer that will net the most points. This is becoming a sad joke, but I may as well graduate at this point.

So gender is an interesting topic, but the chinese figured it out thousands of years ago with the yin and yang. I could care less about these crazy fucking words and definitions that people make up. Not sure if there is a good phrase for it, but they're just complicating shit for the sake of complicating it and sounding smart - pseudo intellectualism - that's it. So how to deal with this?

Even worse is that to do well in this kind of thing you have to toe the line between critical thinking and shattering their fantasy fairy tale world. Though honestly I think I can do both, should I take that challenge or just regurgitate and scrap by?

Just get hella stoned and sleep through it, get back to your house and do the work on your own time. Is it a lecture class?
Not Istanbul.

Surely you can argue whatever you want? As long as you deal with any marking criteria and make a coherent argument you should be fine. Unless you have a shitty teacher of course.

Don't know how to multi quote.. so..

It is a 15 person class with group work and participation expected so I can't just zone out and snooze (I usually try and take advantage of bullshit like this to work on breathing exercises though). It is supposed to be a writing class with the gender theme, so we will have to read and critique other peoples work.

FON, thats is how it is supposed to work in theory, but it doesn't go down like that in the real world. LIke I said it is impossible just because of the institution. A site like this allows open discussion because all opinions are granted the same weight. This is not the case when your work is submitted to grading by a professor - who will let their own opinions and biases influence how they grade. It is human nature and not limited to womens studies, but given the totally subjective nature of the topic - the whole thing is opinion. A lot of times a class will be centered around an opinion, that while it is an opinion, is to be treated as fact and not open for debate. Of course then all that is left is to regurgitate information while putting your own personal spin on it, but without thinking too far outside the box. And that is a liberal arts education in a nutshell.

On the other hand it could be interesting, hopefully I can write about things like robosexuality. And other things that are probably more provocative than these so called open minded people intended.
