Why do australians call drunk driving "drink driving" ?

"Drink driver" "drink driving" ?  sounds silly/not proper.

Had a friend who used to insist "it's DRUNK driving, not driving while DRINKING!"

and he'd pregame on the way to wherever he was driving us.
