I'm currently watching Spice & Wolf. It is beautifully done, some action, but not a ton. Fun discussions between the main characters. Some of the most cleverly executed schemes I've seen outside of Death Note. I've had two people, neither anime fans, get hooked on it just by being in the room while it's on.

80% of the show is made of four things. Complex trade deals, banter, discussions of medieval economics, and flirty banter. In roughly that order.


If that's not up your alley, check out my review thread to see if there's anything you'd like better. I swear, I don't think anyone is reading those things.

What do you think of Fruits Basket? I've been turned into a total SoL faggot and can give some pretty good recs if you enjoyed it.

If not I didn't really like SAO but have a handful of recs that are in the same general sphere you might enjoy.

Fruits basket is the gayest most boring anime I've ever seen.  Put it down and never looked back after 4 volumes(Ok i read the manga, not anime)

OP you know the .hack series?  U might like if you like sword art online.  Or Log Horizon

The artwork in the manga just turned me off. The animation wasn't amazing, but good enough and they dialed the bishonen factor way down. It's a bummer though because I really want to know how the manga ended.

Check out Hachimitsu to Clover, SoL with a focus on character development and romance themes. Comedy is mixed in but it's a drama at its core. Very cute, but there's a level of realism that's hard to find in the genre. If you grit your teeth and bear with the josei art style you'll be glad you did.

Cowboy Bebop. Watch it now, if only to get an opinion on it and say that you've watched it already.

Coming in second and third place are Trigun and Hellsing. And no, I'm not going to shut up about Cowboy Bebop. As long as there's someone who has watched anime but not CB, I will talk about it 'till I'm blue in the face.

ugh, give it up dude. Bebop is fun but squarely entry level. Trigun is over actiony and has really abysmal writing.

It's a good anime, plain and simple. Great writing, good animation, (at least for its time) good action, good characters, great music, good set pieces. Now of course I can't speak for everyone and with any entertainment, YMMV. But CB is loved by many for good reasons. There's a pretty good chance the OP will like it.

Agree CB is entry level.  I don't know any otakus who haven't seen it.

Trigun was one of my firsts so it holds a special place in my heart although back in the day they had a nasty habit of starting to adapt manga series into anime, catching up too fast, n then some douchebag writes his own ending. 

The trigun manga series is much better than the anime.  Completely different.  My only complaint is the action is almost impossible to tell what's happening.  Still it's good artwork.

I agree with this. There is nothing wrong with entry level because that is how people get into anime. I never progressed past entry level to be honest because I don't have interest in being an otaku or some gay shit like that. Watch what you like not what makes you part of a sad sad community.

Also if you need something good to watch hit up Sgt Frog. That nigga is cray.
