having trouble keeping attention on books
« on: October 25, 2014, 12:07:58 am »
I have Stephen kings the gunslinger and the book of blood by clive barker, they seem interesting but I get easily distracted and bored while reading. what do I do to get over this? when I was younger I used to read all the time and loved it so much more, its quite a shame

I get like that from time to time. Usually, for me, it's due to the book itself. Some just aren't attention grabbers, even if they are otherwise good or interesting.
I'll try anything once, and twice to be sure.

Make sure you actually like the books. Could it be that you like their ideas in theory but not execution? Perhaps you just don't like the way they articate these ideas? Have you tried meditation? It will help extend your focus, with practice. It can also help make you more aware of what you do and don't like in a book. Alternatively, you may just be reaching for things you want to like rather than work you really enjoy. Try reading some things you would ordinarily pass up and see if something maintains your attention longer. If none od this shit works, see a doc for some amphetamines.

Try reading the ending first? That way you'll be intrigued from how they got from point a to point b

I find myself able to focus once or twice a year enough to read a book.  The only time I ever get any reading done is at the airport or on an airplane because I don't have anything else to do.  I read a fair amount online, but I tend to have the same problem.  It could be ADHD or it could be as other people said, you're not that into what you're reading.  I just rarely am relaxed enough to sit down and read.  If I do any reading it's usually at night once I've had plenty of time to wind down from my day.  When I'm traveling there really isn't anything else I can do, so it works.  When I'm at home, I should be cleaning or taking care of other stuff so my mind is preoccupied.

It could have something to do with ADD/ADHD, but I think it's more likely you're just having trouble getting interested in the book itself. When I was younger I'd read almost every night before bed. I have ADD, and I would use a book as a tool to help me fall asleep. It took me a few years to realize this. At night right before bed, I'm not usually able to just lay my head down on the pillow and conk out, because my mind would bounce from this or that, and having my mind focus on one thing for an hour or two would help my mind focus on one thing, and finally gear down and relax enough for me to fall asleep.

This is also why I probably wear glasses today. As a littlun I had a bed time at 9 pm. I couldn't just conk out right away at 2100 because my mind was just as hyper at night as my body was during the day. So I'd read goosebumps (revenge of the garden gnomes was one I must have read over a dozen times) by nightlight for a few hours 'till I could fall asleep. Basically the equivalent of reading by candle light, the strain of focusing on small print in low light over time fucks with your eyesight.
