Not to make sweeping generalizations, but I've noticed that a few black moms are really good at embarrassing their kids as punishment lol.  In 7th grade we had this class that was home ec one semester and shop the second, and one day in the shop half of class I walked in and saw this lady sitting at our table.  Sat down, said hi, and she introduced herself to me as my friend's mom.  Then she went on to say that she was spending the entire day following her son around, "to find out why he's doing so poorly."

He had his face buried in his hands and I felt so bad for him.  That's what happens though, I guess.  Do well in school or you'll be punished haha.

They're being taught discipline. It's a good thing, really. Maybe that's why they take out their frustrations on white people in those knockout games.

Apparently there's some actual scholarship on like "scarlet letter" punishments that are based on shaming criminals into behaving appropriately but I've always had my doubts. Like even if it really is effective I feel like there's some essential right of humans to dignity that's being violated by that kind of punishment. It's always been kind of an awkward subject for me because I'm pretty well committed to a consequentialist framework of justice but in this situation, the deprivation of humans of dignity, I have a really hard time saying the ends justify the means.

Like at some point I'm willing to say sure, maybe stripping one person of their dignity is worth it if it's going to save X other people from certain death or something. But short of that, up to the point of a human life hanging in the balance and maybe even further, I have this intuition that preserving human dignity is really worth something and that we have an obligation to preserve it.
