Dental hygienist
« on: October 21, 2014, 04:17:46 pm »
Hello.  Recently I have been thinking about going back to school (don't wanna be a fast food restaurant cashier for the rest of my life).  I have my eyes on dental hygiene, and the only reason is because the pay is, or can be, quite good.  I don't really have any passion for oral/dental care or anything, just to be honest.  I will be in it only for the money.

Do you guys think this career path will suit me?  I can be quite careless at times, I admit.  So I don't know if I would be a good dental hygienist.  What other traits are required to succeed in this role?  I want to assess my own suitability (or lack thereof) for this profession.

Thanks.

edit:  Maybe I should go into greater details about my own traits and personality to help you guys get a clearer picture of me.  The things I really truly enjoy doing are reading, learning English, and coming to online boards to argue with people.  I don't like to do anything else nor am I really good at anything else.  But there are no jobs that allow me to make a living off of coming online to argue with people.  So I have to think of something else that will help me pay the bills and bring home the bacon.

A careless dental hygienist that is only in it for the money?  Sounds awesome.  I would go there.

you will end up homeless

just do what the rest of us do, pick whatever makes the most money and spend the rest of your life working somewhere you hate, trapped in a suburban hell while you wait for something to happen that never does.

not really...I was just thinking that I should tell you guys a bit more about myself and see if you guys could come up with some sort of idea or suggestion that would help me make a better career choice

A hundred years from now, pretty much everyone and everything we know will be long forgotten and never brought to light again.  Ever.

afaik, 'lab techs' don't make the big bucks, but it is a solid career choice.  I personally would go into like finance or accounting or something just to be close to the money

"Hygienists make comfortable salaries, especially considering that many in this profession work part time. In 2012, their median salary was $70,210. The best-paid earned about $96,280 and the bottom 10 percent earned $46,540. Many of the top-paid hygienists work in dentists’ offices, but outpatient care centers and ambulatory health care services also pay well. The profession’s best-paying metropolitan areas include San Francisco, Vallejo, Calif., and Santa Rosa, Calif."

Not too shabby.  There are several other high-paying jobs out there that don't require you to scrape junk off of people's teeth, unless that's what you decide you're into.  How much debt would you have to issue to complete the requirements?  The part-time work for a good salary would definitely be appealing.  There just wouldn't be a lot of room for advancement unless you earned more certifications.

This got me thinking, would it be cheaper to get all my teeth remove and replaced with false ones or carry on for years seeing the dental surgery?

If you are needing a lot of dental surgery, then it would be cheaper to get all your teeth removed.  You would lose some functionality, but I suppose it would be cheaper overall.  Don't forget to clean your gums.

The money aspect would be nice but you have to think about the nasty ass mouthed people who would come in to see you... got to have a strong stomach I would assume...
