What does any of that have to do with Obama?

Ohhh, right.  It all makes sense now :)

I kind of agree with theKit though.  It probably doesn't matter one way or another if these people are "made examples of", but there is absolutely no reason now to be harsh when dealing with cases like this.  People who own guns know they need to be extremely careful when using them, and the government should do what it can to discourage irresponsible use.

I could spend literally days on end posting a litany of news articles and videos of cops and soldiers using weapons irresponsibly.  Who is going to discourage them from irresponsible use?

Discouraging irresponsible use =/= Giving people exorbitant charges that are unrepresentative of the crime they may or may not have committed

Yeah hopefully those laws are tightened as well.  The eventual hope is that most police officers won't even carry guns on their person.  The military is gonna be even harder to tackle, unfortunately :(

We don't even have all the details here, so we can't know if the charges were exorbitant or not.  Florida has the felony murder thing, maybe they determined he was committing a felony prior to the shooting.  Is aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (or whatever) a felony in Florida?

So your hope is that firearms are eventually phased out altogether?

that first response is retarded what we should hope for is police will be better trained to use their duty weapons. As for the military being fazed out let's talk isis down with campfire songs u guize.

I wasn't so much referencing this case in particular more so that entire mind set. That mindset is not what the court system is for.

Hunters and hobbyists would still use and collect them, respectively.  But yeah the hope is that eventually there will be no need to keep guns around for self-defense or law enforcement purposes.

Mindset?  These people should be dealt with harshly, but never beyond what the law is written to allow.  That seems reasonable, right?

Courts are for ascertaining guilt or innocence beyond a reasonable doubt through due process that is it they are not for making examples of people

the idea of no one ever having to defend themselves or the police ever needing a lethal resolution is laughable and entirely naive however

Someone obviously doesn't understand how humanity works.
Until an equally effective non-lethal alternative to guns is invented - guns will be needed. Period.

Pretty much this ^

Also the current usage of what was considered "non-lethal" has been coined as less than lethal now due to the fact that when events are escalated there are variables that can never be fully predicted that no matter through any fault of the operator could have a lethal result.

No one ever getting hurt is a pipe dream and unfeasible.

So...what would stop a criminal from shooting someone with a hunting rifle?

Once you sit down and hash it out, the only thing that really stops someone from shooting people is someone else with a gun will come along and put the fucker down.  Whether it be cops or citizens, it should not matter.  Along those same lines, cops are generally terrible shots, and kill bystanders at nearly the same rate that nigger gangbangers do.

Common sense, a well-developed sense of morality, and a sober mind.

And how do you impart the same morals across an entire species? Your train of thought that everyone can just be nice is extremely farcical.

Yes it is they just need to be trained and held to better standards than they currently are.

also I agree with this

No its a good thing citizens have guns.

Do you realize that if we banned guns tomorrow, they would be popping up in the hands of criminals every day for the next hundred years?  Do you realize just how many guns are actually out there?  There is no getting rid of them, ever.  There are still guns from WWII stockpiles being used in armed conflicts right now, this very second.
