I once read this story from these two medieval inquisitors about a witch who supposedly stole the penises of men and kept them in a bird nest but they's move around like worms and shit for some reason. It was an excerpt from a longer work and the collator actually commissioned someone to paint a picture of the witch looking on as the penises crawled around in the nest and it was published next to the story. This thread reminds me of that.

So the story is that some old lady risked a horrific death by inquisitory torture, and used diabolical powers meant to move the heavens and earth, to make dicks wiggle around in a goddamn birds nest for her own amusement?  I think the inquisitors had some fucking sick imaginations, is what happened.....

Yup, that's the gist of it. The prevailing theory was that the inquisitors were retelling what was actually supposed to be a joke but the cultural differences between their ecclesiastical training and folk humor was such that they thought it was supposed to be a literal account.
