Free virus protection

Dose any one know a good source for a good free virus protection package??

Honestly, the best virus protection you can have is free. Hit the Windows key + R and type in msconfig. Hit enter. Now go to the Services tab. Check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box and then disable everything you don't need starting up and running in the background. Then go to the Startup tab. Disable everything you don't need starting up and running in the background. Make sure not to disable the important stuff your computer needs but if you do, it's no biggy. Just enable everything and start again.

Ever since I started doing this about 5 years ago at least, I haven't gotten a single piece of malware. Ever.

In all seriousness, antivirus is obsolete anymore. It's ALMOST useless. You're better off sandboxing your browser sessions and running a VM. If you're tech-retarded, you should use an AV. Avast is a decent free one. If you have no qualms with piracy then I recommend pirating nod32 or kaspersky.

If you didn't mind, I would just restore the whole computer honestly. That way, you start off clean and you won't have to run through a big list of what to keep and what not to during startup.

There's tons of decent free that I install for friends that want AV. Avast or AVG are the two I use most often.

Microsoft security essentials/Windows defender if you are taint Windows. Installing adblock plus to Firefox or chrome also helps a lot. Really though the best antivirus is yourself there is no perfect anti virus program but generally anything that has a paid version is bull shit and will be constantly nagging you to upgrade while basically doing nothing for you protection wise.

When my brother bought his new laptop he spent about $100 on an antivirus plus even more on warranty. I asked him why wasted that much money and he said just in case and because the people at the store recommended it. Now I'm not a tech savvy person but I'm no idiot either. Their whole purpose is to sell those products.  He could of just gotten a free one and saved that money for something more important. I was about to buy a laptop and the guy kept pushing me to buy the antivirus, I was like 'ill pass' and he kept insisting.

Kaspersky currently has by far the best detection rates, so if you're planning to use a paid AV, it's hands down the best choice. The free ones are all pretty much useless.

However, if you're not a complete fucking moron, AV is just a waste of system resources.

I always buy the warranty for accident protection. Right before it expires spill a glass of water, go in get a better laptop for that year at the price point from 2-3 years before. Golden. But with my iPad I flip out on the poor apple store funployees and make them give me a new one.
