My point?  No you misunderstand.  There are very good reasons for news articles being simple.  Didn't really have a point.

My title felt awkward as I wrote it, but I can't find any grammatical errors.  Can you point them out?  Hopefully I'll stop making that mistake

Grammatically, the proper wording would be News articles are written on about an 8th grade reading level, and even that sounds weird. News articles are written on an 8th grade writing level is succinct and to the point.

I don't misunderstand you, and I agree with you. Bottom line is that articles in general, especially news articles are written with the intention that anyone with a basic level of reading and comprehension skills can grasp the information and/or content. How they disseminate content is a whole other ballgame.

What number is significantly less? The percentage of people capable of reading news? Most of the US population has graduated highschool and thus is capable of reading at an "8th grade level". Someone is, of course, going to feel compelled to try and make a dig at the US education system, but before that happens I'd like to point out that to defend that claim one would have to explain how it's possible that all these people have graduated from highschool (which involves standardized testing for reading) and then demonstrate that's actually the case beyond "I knew this one dude once who couldn't read, lol stupid americans".

Voter apathy is an issue in a democracy but I don't think we can use that (or whatever statistic you're talking about but haven't actually provided) as a condemnation of media outlets.
