Racism is founded in ignorance, and back in those days people were obviously very ignorant of cultures not their own. When those cultures did clash, racism took place. Like uhm. How can you not say the colonials weren't racist toward Native Americans? Or maybe a bit after that I guess, when we herded them up and placed them on crappy "reservations"? There's an example of racial discrimination predating the word "racism", if you're even right about the word.
It was just a fact of life back then. They are them, and we are us. They're not like us and that means we're better because we're proud of the things that make us who we are. And since we like us because we're not like them, I guess we don't like them because they're not like us.
But it wasn't until we grew a little before we started to realize that maybe hating people because they're superficially different isn't such a great thing to do.

The word may be limiting, but the actual social phenomenon it tries to describe be something we created inadvertently loooong before the language came about. Sure, there's probably an inherent superiority that some people feel to other cultures but do you think columbus/cortez/everyone slaughtered brown people because they thought they were better than them? You can look at all the treaties as "racism omg" but that's the dumbest way to think of things. Consolidating and expansion of power is what it really is. Do you think blacks were enslaved because they're black? Do you think anyone in america had ever met a black? If anything it was an acknowledgement of the physical prowess of blacks that they could survive a ships journey (British convicts to australia only had a 10% survival rate for the longest time) with a much higher success rate and still work their ass off when they got there. "racism" was used to justify it but its an inherently man made construct. I don't believe anyone is truly racist. The whole "jews run le world" thing is pretty funny because there's a shred of truth to it.
