The salute was not only a way to follow military protocol and show respect, it was also a way of showing that the subordinate did not have a weapon in his hand. Think about it, that's why one typically salutes right handed as opposed to left. Instead of a sloppy salute, he could have muttered "at ease soldiers" and have been 10x more respectful.
