making bank in college

I'm in college now, and I can't fall back on my old ways of making money. this is especially weird for me, because all my NEEDS are free(after $64k in tuition)...rooming, medical, food...I've been floating off of what I had from selling my passat, but that won't last forever.

I can't do mobile mechanic work, because the schools automotive program steals all my business.

I can't flip/break cars because:
-no shop to do the work in
-nowhere to park it
-I have class when the auto auction is

I can't get a real job because of my schedule

campus jobs SUCK and are really only good for paying off tuition

I've had moderate success buying broken laptops on ebay, having the campus techies fix them (free to me) then selling them on craigslist. shipping and hard drives are cutting in to the bottom line hard though, and I think the nerds are starting to catch on...

buying subs/stereo equipment from tweakers who need quick cash is good money, but slow money, and my roomates are kinda pissed our dorm is full of shit

leasing tools to DIY'ers in the dorm complex is nerve wrecking, some dipshit misusing my expensive hard-earned tools on his POS honda prelude...some people respect my shit, but not enough.

for christmas I'm going back to Atlanta, I'm going to try to find a rust-free desirable car, and bring it back up here to sell. the trick is i need to get it all set up ahead of time, so I don't have to park it until it sells.

some of this is long-term, some of this is short term. I need suggestions/input for both.

I get kicked out of the dorm complex every time there is a break, but I can't go home...so as soon as my contract is up, I'm moving out. I can get a boring 2bdr apartment for $1400/semester, but there are better options...

I found an 11 room house off-campus

I have parking spots but no shop

minus "expenses". this house has no garage, and I'm not sure if I'm tryna make this big of a gamble. if someone fucks shit up, skips rent, starts a fire, MY name is on the lease.

I found a 4-bay garage apartment for $2400/semester

if I was going to break cars, this would be the place. offer free room to automotive students in exchange for labor breaking cars, buy one in auction, rip out everything worth something, list it all on ebay and scrap the rest...parking slots allow for flipping as well.

I'd also be dealing directly with the landlord, not a leasing agency...which is a huge plus. its also closer to campus than the big house.

its also kindof a dump, and utilities are not included. it already has an air compressor.

to me, this seems better than the big house.

if I cross the river, rent goes WAY down, I haven't looked too closely but I know a 6bdr house with garage/basement goes for $3k/semester.

although I do like the stock idea...cryptocurrencies seem a little sketch for my taste, personally nothing has the feeling of raw cash...the weight, the smell, the power...numbers on a screen are just numbers on a screen.

I'll look into stock trading though, when Rockstar pushed back the release date for GTAV their stock dropped, if I was in on it I would have bought in, and sold once it was released (something like $800,000,000 in a few weeks).

the laptop racket is just something to keep me busy until I can get make some moves happen...usually I just buy them with fucked hard drives, buy a 500gb hard drive for cheap, and let the campus nerds install it/load windows/load software then I just sell it.

2 hrs a day is a lot for a college-age girl, unless that is all theyre paying.  you might make more having them pay a small amount of rent with a lesser amount of camwhoring.  a big issue for most of them is anonymity.  meaning...it would be more appealing to them if they can keep their faces and tattoos hidden so friends and family dont find out.  if they didnt have self esteem they wouldnt be going to college.

I've been able to make some good money picking up free or cheap mattresses from Craigslist and then selling them to college kids.  The big college in my city has a Facebook group for student classified ads that I advertise the mattresses on when I'm selling them.  A used queen mattress with a box spring goes for $100-180 including delivery, and that's almost 100% profit when you can get them for free.

A friend of mine in college had a little side business in his dorm giving haircuts.  A pair of clippers is only about $20 and I think he charged $5 per cut, so he made his money back quickly.  Some of his work looked a lot like $5 haircuts, but we were in the cheapest dorm on campus, so most of us were happy to pay because we couldn't afford anything better.  Another guy ran a little convenience store out of his dorm room.  He set up a few shelves and sold things like ramen, candy, energy drinks and phone cards (anyone remember those?) at a big markup.  I think he made some pretty good money doing it.  You could probably use a store like that as a front for selling beer at an even bigger markup, but that one could get you into serious trouble.

I used the coffee maker in the dorm to heat the water, 1 cup water, 1 cup tequila, 1 package=17 jello shots.

3.79*4=15.16
12*.77=9.24
4*12.90=51.60

with the current recipe, factoring 4 cups/liter (short, I know)
4*4=16 cups of tq
17 shots/cup of tq

16*17=272 shots.

I only had 12 things of jello and 200 shot cups, so I made 12 batches

12*17=204 shots using 3 liters of tequila

(12*.77)+(4*3.79)+(3*12.90)=63.10
jello       the 50 cups   tequila    total for 200 shots

200/63.1=32 cents per jello shot.

at $2 each, that is a 168% profit margin
at $1 each, that is a 60% profit margin

my asking price is $2 each or 3 for $5, however I give everyone the "friend" discount, and sell them $1 each most of the time. they sell as fast as I can make them, my RA was easy to bribe off and since its word of mouth and people I know, campus police hasn't caught on.

next go round I am going to make them with vodka (cheaper) and I'm pretty sure I can steal the shot cups from food services, lessening the expense of alcohol and eliminating the cup expense. if I use store brand jello ($.33 a packet) I can cut down there as well.

I had banked on making them extremely strong with the tequila, that people would pay the $2 just because they were so strong...the market has spoken, cheaper is better than quality.

cheap vodka (factoring $10/liter. may be less, idk yet)
cheap jello .33/packet
stolen shot cups

(3*10)+(12*.33)=$33.96
vodka     jello       total

provided I can steal the shot cups.

200/33.96=$.05 each.

at $1 each, that is a 95% profit margin.

This thread really delivered.. Hell yea, man.. If your making some solid bank and you've managed to secure your operation, then I'd call your little operation a success. You really don't need a lot of money to get by on in college, well.. guess it depends on the campus. But at least your making some decent pocket money on the regular. Have you been selling for enough nights yet to figure out like your daily profit average? I could even see you improvising with this further.. making specials for certain days of the week, or taking possible request suggestions. Smart on giving "everyone" the friend discount.. everyone loves the idea of getting a better deal than someone else. I do advise you to be careful though.. Selling to minors on campus and what not.. even though your making some decent little pocket money, its not worth getting some shit on your record for it. Have an exit strategy, it never hurts.
