I don't really believe in anyone being banned unless they do something illegal or something that the site owner may be personally liable for.  Moderators should be limited in power, and their function should be to move out-of-place posts and watch for overt illegal activity.  Nothing more, nothing less.

If there was a reason to ban someone, there should be a special team that handles that.  Like a 'headsman' type moderator or admin.  Someone like psychomanthis, that everyone fucking hates.  That would make it much more of an outrage to be banned.  Knowing that pyschomanthis is having a powergasm somewhere after hitting the ban button would fucking enrage me.
