How long until we have thanks?

Haven't received a rebuttal to this yet I think:

Q: Can we have a Thanks/Reputation system here?
A: I have seen a whole lot of rep systems in my time on the 'netz and all of them have been retarded. A normal rep system where it keeps a total of all the rep you earned leads to reputation spam. A thanks system where it only keeps track of the thanks given to each post is hardly better.

What it leads to is friends upvoting each other just because they're friends, funny posts getting thanked instead of the more smart and thoughtful posts, posts getting upvoted because it tells people what they want to hear instead of what they should be hearing, and posts deserving of upvotes not getting them simply because they're on the last page of posts and some users TL;DRing all posts past the first or second pages. Not to mention the small amounts of drama it causes when someone gets a lot of or all the upvotes and another doesn't, no matter how intelligent or well they conduct themselves simply because of something that happened in the past and people are holding a grudge...

Rebuttal: no one's really gonna cry 'cause they don't have tons of thanks.  If they do we can laugh at them until they stop.

As to the rest?  This isn't some hardcore serious stuff.  Silly posts will get thanks along with the super helpful and intelligent ones.  That's how it happened on Zoklet.  Why is this a problem?

It's something fun for the users.  Gives us another button to press, and who doesn't like pressing buttons?  Dunno what drama would come about as a result, but I've a feeling the people who would throw a fit over it would find something to be upset about regardless.  If it's something we'll enjoy using, what's the big issue?

Really it's not a huge deal either way.  If we get it the site is slightly more entertaining and fun to use, that's all.  Drama mostly comes from downvotes imo, which are not part of the system.

Anybody who has visited drugs-forum is probably familiar with their rating system. You can give negative or positive rep, but you have to include a justification. The whole system is accessible to moderator edits. On that site people only use it to commend informative posts or to warn readers of poor content, and while we don't have the same structure built to guarantee that degree of contribution, I think with us it's worth trying to see if it might default in a similar fashion. If we were to implement thanks, I think this would be a more constructive way to go about it.

Please don't do this. The majority don't want this. There are a just a few insecure kidiots who are screaming for it. Stay the course, stick to your guns, and let the few whine until they tire themselves out and fall asleep in their cribs.

Our average number of alts per poster would soar.

This system could work on something like bluelight, but it wouldn't work here at all.
