I understand us stoners may be a little forgetful sometimes but that is no excuse for an unclean bong. If a bong has not been cleaned properly it can become a hazard. I have seen people who have kept the same bong water in their bong for ungodly amounts of time and there appears to be shit growing in the bong. This is fucking disgusting! Are you one of these people? If so I hope you understand exactly what is happening in your bong. You essentially are creating a tiny ecosystem quite perfect for bacteria to grow and develop. What do you think happens when you take a rip? All that bacteria goes straight to your lungs.

Good bong maintenance:
1. Change your bong water every week (preferably earlier)
2. Give your bong and slides a complete scrub down at least every month
3. if there is anything stuck to the inside of your bong stem its time to deep clean (alcohols, cleaning solutions etc)

A couple of tricks for an easier clean, you can use kosher coarse ground salt, or epsom salts, and a little bit of rubbing alcohol, or a combination of hot soapy water and lemon juice. Honestly, a lot of people like to try to tell me the alcohol is a bad idea and will fuck your lungs up, but the closer to pure isopropyl rybbing alcohol you use, the better it will evaporate and not be a problem. Add more salt than detergent of course, because the salt is what is going to scrub that nasty shit off your piece.

Also, Change a little more frequently than once a week, preferably after every couple sessions, and a few drops of lemon juice in your water will help slow resin from binding to your glass.

Try 1/2 cup of NaOH to 1/4 cup of NH4NO3 (cold packs are fine) and 300ml of rubbing Alcohol. Swirl, do not shake. Vent if needed.
