The First Few Steps
« on: September 06, 2014, 07:06:58 am »
I would love to see those who have yet to prep, but want to, have a guide of where to start and how to go about it. There is a long list of things to do and many preparations to make, many methods and much advice to be given. When I started all this the hardest thing I found was the very first step, where to start and where to go from There.

Could other preppers perhaps get their experience and advice out here for others new to the prepper culture? I would like to start with a basic list of things to do, not how but what. Just to start with. What are the first steps to preparation in your opinions? I myself hope to learn some things.

My to do list. First five steps.

1) Assess your geographical location of the most likely events to have an impact on you, develop a plan for evacuation including when to " bug in" or shelter in place.

2) Using the evaluation in step one prepare a 3 day and 7 day 'bug out bag' for each member of your family/group that is appropriate for you situations

3) Arrange for training with red cross and other organizations for inexpensive or free first aid, CPR or more advanced medical training.

4) Build a library of resources such as gardening books, medical references, survival ect. Talk with your group/family and asses skills and interests and designate subject matter leaders. My sister is the farming/ gardening leader, my father is mechanical, myself hunting and survival, my cousin the EMT is medical etc...

5) Plan for long term food storage using various methods appropriate to you situation, apartment city dwellers and rural or suburban home owners will need to go about this in different fashions. Research long term food storage and get ready to prep.

I hope this helps people out there and others are willing to pitch in. The more people prepared the fewer roving mobs of hopeless starving desperate survivors there will be and the more hope for humanity and a recovery down the road.

With regards to medicines how would you intend on acquiring them? Theft, chemical synthesis, ethnobotanicals, or a combination of all three? Sounds to me like you'd need a chemist and not the kind that count out pills. Painkillers, e.g. opiates, are relatively simple to harvest and purify. But a person who could synthesize complex drugs such as antibiotics would be someone with a very valuable skill.

I admit that would require great investment in terms of education and resourcing. It's the choice between surviving or thriving in a very hostile world.

So I've been trying to get started on prepping. But then I thought to myself that if shit was to hit the fan why would I want to live thru times when people around me are dying of hunger or disease? That sounds like a really bad time. Why deal with all the unnecessary bullshit. One thing I would be down for is risking my life to take down the government. At least that would count for something.

I do get what you are saying but this topic was to discuss the beginning steps to help people such as Soso0 who admits he wants to start prepping but doesn't see the point. The above things I mentioned were a "frame work" for some people to get an idea how to think "basic" when it comes to prepping.

As for what you mention: learning those skills make you a valuable asset and at the same time: a target. If you do know how to do all of that information then it's advisable to help only those you want to survive as helping everyone gets you talked about word of mouth which will possibly lead to a raid on you for your preparations...

Food for thought...

So I've been trying to get started on prepping. But then I thought to myself that if shit was to hit the fan why would I want to live thru times when people around me are dying of hunger or disease? Just do what you can. I'm more on the side of prepping for small events such as a week or two without power, due to my location, to the possibility of having to eat from my pantry for a month or three. The little things man help in the long run, especially when hours get cut from your paycheck and instead of staving you can just dip into stuff you set aside. If you think of prepping like that instead of a SHTF type event with guns in a closet while the Army kicks in your door to rape you during Martial Law or its actually aliens getting you, it is more of a "better" idea.

As for your point of taking on the government: prepping for a long term event like that takes time and preparations. Better get started now eh?

i have 1000 lighters and a copious amount of methamphetamine hidden at what I deem 'spot X,' and that's my preparatory plan.

as idiotic as that post is, if there were ever such a shtf situation recreational pharmaceuticals, especially alcohol, and nicotine, would be at a premium.

I know you are trolling but you, as InfinityShock mentioned, have a good plan of sorts. Junkies will be EVERYWHERE and if you have a drug you can charge whatever you want as long as you can defend yourself.

Although it'll be like sticking it into a dirty peanut butter jar full of very warm KY for the quality you'd probably get.

Now as a homesteader / prepper myself I'm kinda going at it alone right ATM so I'm taking the steps to making property do most of the work for me for many things.

For a garden I've started to build an aquaponics greenhouse which I'm working towards making as maintenance free as I can, When my land is fully payed off I will also be rebuilding my house into something much more efficient and sustainable.

My suggestion to people looking into starting a homestead though would be save the money on a house and use it instead to buy land, Build a small place to start and a few simple out buildings to store things in and get that shit payed off ASAP.

Keep anything you don,t want mice to get into in rubber maid bins because those little cunts are everywhere.

Look into COB buildings if you want to go really cheap or underground houses because the R value is a massive plus.

For firearms, Now I like guns maybe more so than most but I've been coming to the realization that I don't need a million rifles if I'm the only one shooting them.

Look into a multi platform rifle that can shoot multiple calibers.
Something I'm looking into myself is the Rossi Trifecta. It's a single shot break action rifle that can be chambered for .243 Winchester .22 Long Rifle, 20-gauge and .44 Magnum, MSRP  $299.00 to $329.00.

If you're looking for a bolt action rifle there's also the Thompson Dimention chambered in .204 RUG, .22-250 REM, .223 REM, .243 WIN, .270 WIN, .300 Win Mag, .308 WIN, 30-06 SPRG, 7MM REM Mag, 7MM-08. MSRP $ 689

Besides that if you're wanting something that can put allot of rounds down range and cheapish look into the SKS 7.62X39 or the SVT 40 7.62X54R. This is a bonus if you reload because they both take .310 - .311 bullets but you may be able to use the .308 bullets that many other .30cal rifles use.
These two rifles are also highly modifiable and have other bolt action rifles that use the same round as them.

As for a .22LR the 10/22 is a great semi auto but I'm partial to anything that's bolt action personally. A bolt action isn't picky what you feed it has less maintenance and less that can go wrong with it.

Onto traps, Rat traps will get you squirrels, small birds, ect. If you can get some 110 Connibear traps or even a few 220s they'll help you forage and trap very efficiently. Also learn to use snares, snare wire, deadfalls, spring traps, ect. The more knowledge you keep in your head the more you'll be able to "make do" with what you have. Plan to live with nothing, prepare to live with everything.

Knowledge is everything. Youtube is a great resource for a free start and there's message boards and .PDFs galore out there that you can glean off of. One thing I would stress the most though is practice what you're learning.

When I first started to learn to make a bow drill it took me a solid hour to figure it out properly and to learn the best way for me to get a fire started, Now I can start a fire in about thirty seconds.

Learn to forage and learn to eat what you forage, We're very spoiled to live in the time we do but when you have to pick your own food it might not be as flavorful as you'd expect it to be. Hot sauce and ketchup packets are your friends.

I could go on but I got to get get some shit done today so I'll leave with this.
Three things you should have on you as a prepper at all times is a way to make fire, a knife, and the knowledge and wisdom  to know how to use whats around you to survive.

on that note...ive stockpiled condoms and KY for just such an occasion. im not sure how to stockpile the morning-after pill since i havent found any life expectancy for the stuff.  i guarantee that if some chick needs a few gallons of gas when all the pumps are dry shes going to spread her legs for it.  same applies to alcohol, cigarettes, as i already mentioned...recreational pharmaceuticals, luxury hygiene and food items, and all kinds of other stuff people are addicted to in todays society
