If America loses electricity 9/10 americans will die
« on: September 04, 2014, 04:33:16 pm »
I read here that if there was an attack on Americas power grid nine out of ten americans would die.

Here is the quote:
Quote
“By one estimate, should the power go out and stay out for over a year, nine out of 10 Americans would likely perish.”

How do you even fucking justify such a claim? If power went out, yes we would be sent back but 90 percent of the population dying simply because electricity has failed for a long time is fucking absurd.
tl;dr: idealism will not un-rape you.

Might seem insanely high but remember how people freaked out when Facebook wasn't working? I think it may be accurate. The way things are going if something like the power going out were the happen American would be fucked for sure.

That is interesting.  Most people don't have the means to acquire and prepare food and water without electricity (even tap water is treated to an extent).  Our logistics systems would also come to a halt without electricity.  It would be difficult, but we could do it if we all figured out how to hunt and gather without killing each other.

I'd expect a significant number would die at the hands of their armed countrymen runinng around like headless chickens trying to exert 'muh freedoms' in the face of a crisis. And getting to the fridge when the batteries on your obesity mobility scooter have run out is going to be the most physically demanding thing hordes of Yanks have done in years. Still, as long as they can obtain water, having 150,000 excess calories stored around their midriff means many Americans could probably survive until a stable supply of pizza and Krispy Kremes resumes.

Then expect your government to install CCTV in every toilet bowl to ensure 'that our way of life is preserved and this never happens again.'

Spent fuel pools would blow if the electric water pumps died.

We both live in surveillance societies.

If the ventilation systems failed then hydrogen gas given off via radiolysis might ignite but the fuel rods themselves would probably remain intact. Admittedly that would still lead to a large area of contamination but I can't see how such an event, even at numerous sites across America, would kill tens of millions.

it depends on what blew out the power grid...here in suburbia, if a tree takes out a line or a drunk driver takes out a transformer, shit is back up and running in 4 hours tops.

an EMP blast would definitely complicate things, but we'd be back up and running well within a year.

an EMP blast coupled with an coup or civil overthrow, would definitely keep the lights off for a year or more, but there would be other factors killing people off...

9 in 10 is a BS figure, 6-10 MAYBE, thats IF the lights stayed off. people who know cars would be mobile within hours after the blast though.

EDIT-as described in that article, no, we'd be back up in a month tops. the electrical grid is double, and in some places triple redundant on that high of a level, and even then diesel generators and cars would not be effected.

the article is simply trying to scare people.

The power grid is not just one entity, it consists of millions of self-sufficient nodes. In order to take out the entire system it would have to be possible to take out every sub station, and that would be next to impossible without some kind of inter-planetary disturbance.
