I'm gunna go on a limb here and say there may have been pre-existing issues, or complications in surgery. going to be interesting to see how this ends legally.
There's a reason that concussions are taken so seriously these days. A hit to the head in the wrong spot can kill a completely healthy person. Head injuries are fucking serious.

Lol when I worked with disabled people some of them made more than me. Picking up trash on the air force base, or working in warehouses.
