Title: how many of you use public transportation to get around?
Post by: joe camel on October 15, 2014, 01:11:57 am
Ido  even though the buses in my town suck. One comes every hour. $3 day pass, $1.25 one way or $30 for 30 days. The buses do have good ac though thats the only upside. They don't get you where your going fast and i have to leave at least 2 hours early to get to work on time.

Hows the public transit in your city?

The public transportation system here is pretty decent, since it's Vancouver and all. I use the skytrain sometimes for going into town, easier than trying to find a place to park.

By and large though, 9 times out of 10 driving beats the shit out of public transport, congestion and dumbass drivers be damned. I prefer my classic car - though I can't drive it until january due to bureaucracy, so my beater work van will have to do.

I have, and I don't mind it at all. It's $1.86 one way, or you can get a 10 ride pass for $14 or something. If it actually came all the way out where I am (I'm actually 10 miles outside of Red Wing) I'd probably use it to run bags.

I have been lately since my car was smashed to bits. trains are delayed fairly regularly and are expensive as fuck, but the worst part is having to wade through all the aboriginals between the train station and work.

fuck buses though, I hate them. I'll always remember the nightride about 10 years ago (here, trains stop at like 1AM and start again at 5AM, to be replaced by 'nightride' buses that follow the train stations) with the driver who I'm pretty sure was even more drunk than me. he blasted through red lights and stopped at a green light, and got mad as fuck if you wanted to get off the bus. he'd yell at you, then park the bus across three lanes of (light, it was 3am) traffic while you got off. he thrashed it all the way, went flying over speed humps and islands and almost put it sideways regularly.

to make things worse, this was the night ride so everyone was drunk, high or otherwise fucked to pieces. someone had vomited into a bag and tied it off, but it wasn't airtight - it'd roll all over the bus leaving a sickly trail like a fucked-up paint roller. which made more people vomit.

Had to use the bus the last couple months til I got a car and my license back. Shit sucks lol 2$ to ride or 5$ for a day. Plus all the nasty fuckin ak natives. I was on the bus and some fat bitch came in and I thought someone had a nasty fart but it lasted til the bitch walked off the bus and when she got up and walked the whole back of her dress was stained brown and she had shit dripping down her leg. I'm never taking the bus again. I'll walk.

I have yet to have a car so I'm stuck with riding the bus. Luckily the bus system is pretty nice here. We have buses that run every 15 minutes and a few light rails. The only downsides to riding the bus are that during the harsh winters they will run late and that it's a bit more difficult to catch a bus to the surrounding suburbs. Then of course you will occasionally find homeless or smelly ass people but that's occurs the most on certain bus lines.

I live in a an apartment infested neighborhood with lots of discarded bikes left about not to mention bikes on racks that people don't lock for whatever reason. So, public transit is pretty legit; free.

I live in an old farhouse isolated on a hill, 2/10ths mile from a side road.. 8 miles to the small town with nothing in it.. 25 miles to the mediocre college town with nothing in it, and 110 miles from an actual metropolis-esque city.. by which, I mean a small one in regards to what most of you would call a city. What is this public transportation? I'm fixing to get myself a horse and buggy.. or was until gas prices went down... might still consider that horse and buggy thing though.

The smaller passenger buses don't have change counters. So if I'm really broke or about to go cash my work check I'll try to catch one of those, and have gotten on for as little as $0.41. There were days I've been broke, having to ask for courtesy rides getting home from work near the port of Seattle, which is no longer a mandatory policy and is completely up to the drivers discretion. I would feel worse about having to do this except for a lot of times I just pay 2 $1 bills, and the black bus driver gives me a funny look, asks if I have the extra $0.25, and then 10 minutes later let droves of blacks on for free.
I try not to do that unless I absolutely have to, and if it's a payday I'll sometimes pay extra fare on the return trip. Normally the fare is $2.25-$2.50, depending on peak hours, and you get a transfer slip that's good for a few hours. We have a few express buses that don't accept transfers or give them so if you have to use 'em you'll end up paying over $5 for a trip one way.

The metro bus system in my area is all fuckered up. We agreed to a sales tax increase and higher car tabs so the bus system could be expanded 20% by 2016. Well it's 2014 and they are asking for more money. The crooked politicians screamed a bloody category 5 calamity would engulf the metro system if we didn't raise taxes yet again, and when that vote got shut down, they magically were able to find enough money to only cut the buses by about half of what they were threatening.

The politicians are robbing Washingtonian taxpayers blind. We privatized liquor sales, and the tax revenue was supposed to go towards law enforcement and alcohol abuse/education treatment. I-1183 was pretty clear on where the revenue was supposed to go. But somehow in 2012 when they were "balancing the budget" over 100 million of tax revenue from liquor sales was squandered into the state's financial black hole, aka the general fund.

The only people who use public transport in my city are too poor and stupid to get even a $1000 old car. It's expensive as fuck but these poor get the monthly pass. If you don't have a car, you're an idiot in general.

One of the most retarded things I've ever read. Sometimes it's not as easy as just dropping $1000 on a car.

It's because there are only Asians in Asia. Different races aren't meant to coincide.

I wonder if they pay less taxes, too.  Americans who pay all their taxes are getting ripped the fuck off.

Vancouver is filled with all kinds of different races yet we don't suffer those problems either. So much for logic.

I agree.

The only reason I took the bus to work for a year, was to save up money so I could buy a nice car with really low miles and pay it off in full at the time of buying it.  Almost everyone that I saw on the city bus, were either poor/dumb, mentally challenged, drunks/druggies, or little kids.

Waiting for the bus, having to walk from the bus stop to where ever, transferring from bus to bus, people that stink on the bus...all shit.  Riding the city bus is for losers.

Because.
I won't say the transportation here is top notch but the public transportation do get better each year. Our current government currently in the making of another mass relay transportation system.  It's only get better because of the last governance actually listen to people's complain and try to deal with the problem.

On topic of smell and sweat, thanks to the installation of air conditioner in all public buses and trains, it's not as bad as it used to be although we are still being crunched in rush hour. Even in japan they still have the same problem.

Expanding the current station and train will only lead to more inefficiency in non rush hour time while keeping them the way it is, is not really a good way to commute, it raises stress, creating a bad hub central for epidemic to spread, and many other problems. There are a lot of people trying to solve it. Some of the solution are actually well thought and interesting: Digitizing most of white collar jobs, creating a 4 days work week (your daily work hour increase by 2 hour to compensate), making some industry work hour to operate at night (programmers, designers, and some jobs are filled with night owls which actually making some of them more productive).

But changing the way industry work is really hard without proper incentive or strict regulation.

I wonder if they pay less taxes, too.  Americans who pay all their taxes are getting ripped the fuck off.

I'm not sure if our taxes is considered high so I'm going to list out income tax here:
- <$5,000: 5%
- $5,000 - $25,000: 15%
- $25,000 - $50,000: 25%
- >$50,000: 30%

You also get nontaxable income if you get married or have kids. For other taxes, most goods are taxed at 10%, 20% for the imported one. There's also a housing taxes but each region has a different regulation. And most of the time they are really lenient at taxes and only come to you when you reach the $100,000 mark. Even with that the last government here actually make some difference, better transportation and a very cheap healthcare for everyone, which really reminds me about this (http://i.imgur.com/fxFJb6J.jpg).

The only people who use public transport in my city are too poor and stupid to get even a $1000 old car. It's expensive as fuck but these poor get the monthly pass. If you don't have a car, you're an idiot in general.

I do have a car, but spending 3 hours in traffic really burns me out, unless I go with a lot of people or I carry a lot of stuff, either vacation or just visiting relatives. I just say it's not really worth it.

Pretty much the same here relative to the distance of everything. Only time I ever used any type of transportation service was when I was extremely drunk in Columbus, OH and was bar hopping, if I remember right it was $12 for 4 miles. There's only 30 thousand people in my entire county.

Buses/stops wouldn't even be remotely practical here, a taxi would be profitable here not practical, it's simply too easy of an option for a drunk/poor/generally unmotivated individual.

Not knocking car less people here, if I lived in NYC or Bangkok I wouldn't want to drive either, but when you live 10+ miles from town or even any type of civilization, getting your own vehicle is probably a wise investment.

Shit, half the illegal aliens I come across all have a car.  Usually a large pick up truck or some beat up import sedan bought from Beirut autotrader.

Bullshit. I live in Seattle and I've been to Vancouver. It is not the public transportation utopia you are making it out to be. The sky trains are really convenient though.

What? I never said it's perfect. Utopia is a far cry from bearable. But at least it is bearable. At least the skytrain is, whenever I've taken it. That wasn't really the point anyway. I've never seen or heard anything about a significant hygiene/bodily fluids problem, that's for sure. Vancouver is one of the best cities in Canada for public transport, maybe there's a few areas where the people are less then pleasant but after living here for a year, I haven't noticed any race-related problems that I keep hearing you lot talk about.

Anyway, I still prefer driving. All forms of public transport are designed to carry all people; and any large population is going to have it's share of shitty people. That point is moot.
