You know, when I was reading the unread posts for today, I stumbled upon some more of the usual negativity/hostility here, and even though I've read such on this forum before now many times already, I was struck by a sudden thought. I remembered just how long it's been for me since totse2 went down. And with that realization came another that I had a while back before but never truly took to heart. The realization that I've been kinda pussificated ever since by other forums and their stringent rules and the friendly atmosphere they each had in some way or another.
I knew that if I was a year or more younger, I would never have been surprised with the flaming being done here. But then... just how hostile should I be now? The admin sets the standard for the entire site. An admin should always be helpful and patient in at least most, if not all of his/her posts. But then, I think, this is The Sanctuary, the successor of totse2. And as such, it's always been an unspoken rule that bad content and posts should be flamed and defamed, while the good posts and content should be encouraged and fostered.
I don't think there's a way to fulfill both paths as an admin. It has to be one or the other. So now, I'm asking you, my fellow members. Just what kind of atmosphere do we want to encourage? Let's keep in mind too, that too much flaming just leads to us being faggots/Zoklet. And that's what I'm worrying about. If we do go with tradition, that we're gonna take it overboard as it is all too easy to do.
So do we want to be remembered as harsh but fair, or do we want to be remembered as open and civil?

An admin should never set the tone of a site unless he or she is 1. non-existent 2. over bearing.
You should be neither of those things and it should be left to the users to determine the tone of a site. It's a beautiful thing when stuff grows organically.

An admin should set the stage, not the tone. A good community is a result of one that governs itself, in my opinion. Yes, there should be (few) rules and regulations, but that's just setting the stage. Let the action be held by the people on stage.
One cannot suggest how others should act in a live environment. You can say how not to to behave, but not how to behave. If you want to behave in a way that inspires others to follow, do it, but don't discuss it. Then it's just a charade.

I'm saying asking is the wrong approach. Moderate as needed but let it determine itself.
But if you do actually want an opinion, I always value a place that has good content but never takes itself too seriously.

This one's post count dwarfs nearly everyone else's. The active community is also still pretty small and it could just take time for people to find us again to help foster more threads about more things.

As time goes on and the culture of this forum evolves, you should too. You don't have to remain the EXACT same person throughout the lifespan of the site, in fact that would probably make you a terrible admin. I'm not saying you should be a nazi one day and a hippie the next, but learn to see what each action you take does both now and what it does 5 minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years from now. Learn from the decisions you make and use that knowledge in the future. Basically, be human bro.
Some smart guy once said "the person with power gets to decide how history is written." Your the admin, you have more power then anyone else on the site, therefore your actions ultimately decide how we will be remembered. If the general tone starts being too much flaming and not enough mature intellectual discussion then you could ban everyone who's said something offensive, OR, you can just let everyone run wild and let the forum go up in flames, banning any mod who tries to maintain order, either way its your call. Now if your asking what each of your actions should be, then you have deeper problems then running a forum in my opinion.

Guy's, I'm not asking for administration advice. That's covered. I'm simply asking what kind of atmosphere do we want to promote here. I mean, if there's no consensus yet since the forum is still in its early stages, that's fine. I'm just wondering what each of you guys' opinions are.

I'm not going to lie to you all. I have harbored some prejudices against Zoklet in the past, not helped at all by hearing about countless stories told by new members in the past about stupid policies and supposed abuses of power.
Heck, I'm seeing that even some of the userbase harbors some ill will against the site even. Nevertheless, it is wrong to hold such general prejudices against a site when you haven't even gone there yourself, so I apologize.
