Some of us just don't want to deal with bullying nonsense, and the fact is there ARE a lot of emotionally stunted punks hiding behind a badge means I'll still call a spade a spade no matter their occupation or social status.
And despite me managing a myriad of different businesses (most having to deal with the public and a whole lot of weirdos and scumbags) I haven't had to call the police on anyone either personally or professionally for about 20 years. The last time was when I was a night manager at a hotel and some belligerent drunk took a swing at me in a lobby filled with a whole mess of wedding guests, and I didn't think it was prudent or good for my job to beat the shit out of someone in front of kids and elderly people.
The fact of the matter is, no so long ago MOST police officers were actual "civil servants", and every now and again you would find the occasional bad apple in the bunch. But as time goes on and the police are militarized developing more of an "us vs them" mindset against the average citizen, you have more overbearing stormtroopers than you do civil servants.
I berate the attitude, demeanor, and behavior because that is NOT the purpose of a police force...and I sure as hell don't call them on a moments notice no matter how deep the shit gets, because quite frankly they act more like bullying punks than the actual "criminals" they are supposed to be protecting us from.

Granted, over time theyve gone from being peace officers that little kids looked up to, to their current role as enforcers for the corpocracy that are more reviled than appreciated. There are still a minority, unfortunately, of cops that became cops to help, not establish an outlet for their fragile egos
As bad as American cops are they are saintly angels compared to the cops in most other countries. Anyone berating American cops should experience how law enforcement in other countries operates

While I agree that cops in other countries can be a lot worse (at least from what I've heard, not personal experience) it still doesn't excuse American cops to continue to trample on the average citizen and in turn lose our trust and respect more and more every day. You talk about serving a "purpose", and unfortunately that is a huge root to the overall problem.
Many times it isn't about "keeping the peace".....instead its about being a revenue generator (i.e. speed traps, DUI checkpoints) and ALWAYS protecting their own. No matter what. In any other profession, if you find an incapable or corrupt person with whatever title....the rest of the industry wants to root out those rogue fools because it does sully their profession. But cops always stick together under the rhetoric of "the brotherhood", and the fact is they DO get away with a lot more than any average citizen can.
I've already had the unfortunate experience to tangle with a cop that led to him acting like a complete jackass while he was off-duty....to have him stalk, harass, and even threaten me in front of my family on my property....only when he came back a day later all dressed up in his little cop costume while hiding behind his badge/title. If he had any other occupation that day one of us would have left in an ambulance, furthermore my lawyer said if he was anyone else we could have had him charged with stalking, harrasement and terroristic threats. But because he's a cop, you have to prove a "pattern of abuse"...so this little punk gets away scott free.
And I'm no thug, drug dealer, or rebellious teen. I was a respected businessman in the community, in the middle of lily-white surburbia....also trying to instill the "cops are your friends" mindset to my then grade-school son. What's funny, is before that day my son did Safety Town, D.A.R.E at school.....but at the lovely age of 6 I had to teach my son the difference between "pigs" and REAL "police officers"......all because of the bullying tactics of a scared little punk hiding behind his position.
Throwing my incident aside, more and more of the general populous IS losing respect and care for the average cop out there....because of their attitude and tactics in dealing with us. From soccer moms, to clergy, to veterans of wars....WE are tired of this "us vs. them" antagonistic attitude towards the rest of society...and ironically its only making a cops job that much harder because they have made the bed they are now sleeping in.

all of that is true except the part about cops being above the law and consequences. the actuality is completely opposite in that it is extraordinarily easy to give consequences to offensive officers. they really are at the low end of the totem pole in the whole bureaucracy of things. if a cop deserves it, make a complaint. key word being deserves it because if someone files one pointlessly vindictive complaint any other they try to file (valid or not) will be virtually ignored. also...deserves because like i said, it is extraordinarily easy to give a cop problems.
there is too much info on making a cop miserable, that deserves it, but if you google it theres more than enough info. starting off, file an official complaint with his supervisor...generally a sergeant. that gets entered into his personnel file that follows him around his entire career. there might be a minor chit-chat between him and his supervisor or if they take it seriously enough, an investigation would be the highlight of the cops week.
beyond an official complaint to the actual PD, there are city council members or other local politicians that if your complaint has merit can make the cops life miserable

I did everything you said to the letter. First thing I did was go to the cop shop after I chased him off my property, and his shift supervisor (while the chief of police didn't even have the fortitude to be in that room, probably just watching me from the 2-way mirror) just came up with the usual cop-speak bullshit. He said he was "investigating an incident he was witness to while off-duty". Bullshit, he initiated the incident himself...and if it was a real investigation they wouldn't have sent one of the parties involved to come knocking on my door in the pre-dawn darkness telling me to watch my back.
I spoke to 1 or 2 city council members, and even the city manager ("herp derp, we'll keep an eye/look into the situation")....and the only thing that happened to him was that stupid piece of paper on his record that my lawyer drew up for the official complaint. Whoopty-fuckin-doo. Again, ANYTOTHER PERSON IN THE WORLD would have gotten the shit beat out of him, and/or been in front of a judge for his criminal actions....but because he's a cop he gets free reign to act like a stormtrooping bully stalking and threatening people. Period.
At this point I have absolutely no doubts in the least you yourself are part of law enforcement, because your attitude on this thread and especially responses to me exposes a mindset that ONLY a cop would have. Just believing some stupid complaint is a legitimate "hardship" for a cop is proof of that, along with you trying to portray cops as being on the low end of the totem pole. Just more of that "us vs. them" mentality you have, where you actually believe you are "different" than the average citizen.
Now while I don't have any hostility towards you being a cop, because you do seem to be a bit more rational from a fundamental standpoint....I still don't understand why you don't want to clean up your profession and continue to be an apologist for all the dirty cops that make your job that much harder. The fact is you ARE losing the trust and respect of the populace more and more every day, and its all because of law enforcement's actions and demeanor....whether as an individual cop or collectively as a group.
Simple fact is, when I was a rebellious teen partying and raising hell...I actually had MORE respect and regard for cops than I do now. Fast forward 20 or so years with more life wisdom, more life experiences, and witnessing the atrocities/hypocrisies of this world.....you've "lost" me a long time ago. Myself and thousands (if not millions) of other normal average Joe citizens are disgusted with what law enforcement has become the more time has gone on.

first and foremost, im not a cop or any type of law enforcement in any way, matter, shape, or form. as a matter of fact due to some semi-recent issues that pertain to legalities and government regulations that are discriminatory, overbearing, and state-sanctioned criminal, ive taken to disregarding pretty much any law that i feel like. nothing obscene like rape or robbery, tho. i have nothing against cops, and i know there are cops that want to be cops for the reason of helping people, not satiating their control issues. ive also seen first hand how 'police' in other countries are. one example is i watched a carabinieri shoot an unarmed guy who was running from them. i have no idea what he did other than run from the cops. the other examples are the flagrant corruption in cops from most other countries with undeveloped countries being the worst. the lesson ive learned is that when cops are corrupt and out of control, with no respect from the citizenry, the criminals realize this and follow suit, victimizing with little to no concern for the cops. id prefer that situation not follow through into the US
ive made complaints against officers is several different cities and it was only in last few years when i pursued a particular complaint more in-depth that i found out how much problems i made for a particular officer whos indiscretion was much less serious than what you described. for what you described, in the city i live in that cop would have been 'dismissed' if the complaint was validated. in the county i live in no municipal PD would hire a dismissed officer from within the county or one that was fired from any other PD within the US. i know of a situation (long story shortened) where a judge became involved when someone i know apprehended a home invader with a firearm and the cops reacted inappropriately to the homeowner. this is far outside the scope of a judges authority but it still happened. it being a news story that showed up in several media outlets probably helped motivate him but thats not the point.
its suspicious for the city officials outside of the actual police dept to react that way. this is probably a case of the three-sided story. your side, the cops side, and what really happened without the story-tellers interpretation.

While I normally subscribe to the "3 sides to every story" theory....I can sum it up quite easily. Small town politics mixed in with a good ole boy network.
As for you claiming to not be a cop, at this point I just have to take your word at face value. It does seem a bit strange to me that someone that has also had problems with dirty cops in the past himself, would be filled with such empathy for their cause....but perhaps you are just a nicer and more forgiving guy than I am.

After reading this thread I'm going to have to side with the fact that iam simply is. He can say he's not part of "any" dept. but I wouldn't stake my freedom on that. This militaristic country has yet to see the end of their rise of power unfortunately. It will get worse before getting better. Its my sincere hope that all whom have any sympathy for,or, empathy with any of the policing agencies goes down with their beloved force just as hard, nasty, (and hopefully) bloody of a way. Simply for being blind eyed to what is really going on. No. We don't want the criminals running things.....oh - that's right..... they already do. My bad. The way I was raised was simple. There's good guys. There's bad guys. If your raised with morality then you know right from wrong. You make a choice when your young. I choose the bad guys. There is more morality in the few I hang with than there is in the whole fuckin force in this town. Yes we do wrong. And when we do -we do it well. We break it (the law), they take it. Rules are simple. So, to cap; fuck em. All of em. Good guys are over rated. Just let em in close and see who gets the fuckin.
