So registration's going to open back up very soon. The only question is how shall it be this time?
Open Registration:
Same as it was before. Standard system of registering an account and getting a verification email sent. Done.
Invite System:
Registration requires an unused registration code. Anyone with an account here may generate codes to give out to people they trust so they can register an account here.
-
Might as well make it open , its not like there are only savory people here. Giving ppl codes to give out will slow things down a bit but its not gonna keep the fagot fuckers out
-
I vote for open in the long-term, but for a short period of time perhaps just have registration contingent on admin approval. Also, we shouldn't allow black people to register.
-
Totse closed registration was tradition
-
Closed or invite only reg is fear based. Are some of you afraid of something?

We are sort of afraid that this one douche bag from zoklet named snoopy will join, so I say close the registration, just to keep that guy out.
-

House centipedes
I find house centipedes very alarming.
-

It is in order to prevent the sad sacks of shit from Avoyel (Iam & inb4lock) from flooding the forum with CP.
-
To counter the CP and other shit from the losers just limit any account with less than 100 posts from using img and other features which can be abused. If they are here for the wrong reasons their 1st 100 posts will give clues.
-
I vote for open registration. IMO, closing or limiting registration is going against the very ideas of freedom totse was founded on. Even if we make it invite only, the CP spammers who want to get in will manipulate and trick other users into getting codes.
This debate over the registration system feels very similar to the new war on gun ownership rights in the US. Everyone's afraid of a few crazies so they're trying to change the whole system because of it.
-
I kinda feel that if we're to survive we'll need to keep registration open. The "approval-only" registration is part of what was killing zoklet. Took forever to get an account approved, and by then people had moved on.
-

This is a great idea on paper, but when it comes down to putting in action it sorta fails. Everyone whos a new user will be complaining to lower the post requirement and that its unfair, while CP spammers will just post as fast as they can up to 100 posts then continue to spam CP.

I would also like to second this being a pretty good idea.

As opposed to the status quo, or the alternative of becoming a tiny shithole of inbred, cloistered autists?
-
What I don't get is, registration ain't been closed according to the Memberlist. There have been account registrations running all along.
ie: Zanick | Outlander | Registered: 2014-09-06 | Post: 33

That's because I set it to Admin Approval Only for a short time to let some people in.

Agreed. It's a really good idea!

I actually kind of like this. Granted, that would remove my ability to post images until I hit 100 but it would solve that issue. I second this
-
I think closing the regs was a bad move during the migration. I understand why it was done but it should be opened ASAP so that we can pile as many legit &Z members in here as possible. All the spam accounts will be banned eventually and those responsible will lose interest eventually. For now please open the regs so that the rest of the community can join up.
Also Arnox, side not, I saw this was mentioned but, when we click on a new thread it takes to us the bottom of the last page which is annoying if you haven't read any of a multiple page thread. On Zoklet, it would either take you to the first post if you hadn't read the thread before, or it would autoload you to the first new post in the thread based on where you previously left off. This makes navigating threads so much more convenient.

God damn, that's actually quite clever although I would lower the permissions to 50 or so posts, otherwise I think it could discourage newcomers somewhat from dipping their toes in. Can you advise America on immigration policy?

I like the idea. New users complaining about a paedo-filter is a minor gripe. Rapidly posting 100 low-content shitposts just to earn an image posting privilege would be a good indicator that a user needs watching.

I think this could unnecessarily implicate users like Zok Jr. who post exclusively in trivialities and sentence fragments, but have never outright spammed CP. Still, I don't think we have anything to gain by pandering to that class of poster. Overall I'm sold on this idea.
-
The spammer is apparently using a bot, so a stronger CAPTCHA and blacklisting disposable email providers would make the attacks significantly more difficult to script. Might want to try something like that before implementing such extreme measures as an image posting lockdown.

I like this idea also.
-
The invite system lets you build "branches" of users, so you can cut off the whole, poisonous, branch.
The point isn't exclusivity and new users could join on IRC and ask for a code, we could also give them away on twatter and fagbook.

Keep mu name out of your mouth you worthless faggot.
-
I think CP will always exist - This is why you need good mods to get rid pronto.
But some may look at the 100 + post and not bother and I think that is fair at least.
-
Any kind of limitations on legit users will hurt the community a lot more than a few spammers or PI-rats or CP-dipshits, no matter what the justification.
-
Make it admin/mod approval only.
-
Make it admin/mod approval only.
How would we know what are good users and what aren't though?
-
Just make it open registration with limited privileges until you hit 100 posts. If people bitch about it we can laugh at them.
-
Exactly, I think it would just slow down abusive members registering by slowing down registration in general.
Why not just open it wide up, find a group of people that together can have a presence on the board nearly 24/7 to get rid of the shit.
Also look at the email services these people are using, do they use normal emails like yahoo, gmail, etc? Maybe certain disposable email services could be disallowed for registration purposes

You wouldn't. Don't listen to that retard. He's the one who got zok to setup mod/admin approvals for new signups, which basically killed any chance of the forum's expansion.

Nope. That was out of my control. However you can easily tell the ad spammers by there username which is a bunch of gibberish, and check IP's and sign up emails for alts.
Anyway, you'd need someone dedicated to the approval process as not to stifle growth as spectral mentioned. If you have a guy or two looking at registrations you could cover it. This is how it went down at Zoklet and accounts got approved in a day or two and all the ad spammers were kept out.
-

I would also like to second that if you wish to succeed, it's probably best that you just do the exact opposite of whatever Psychomanthis suggests. He means well, but the choices and decisions he made were a huge part of the reason for why Zoklet isn't around anymore.
What Spectral said was pretty harsh, but Psychomanthis kind of is a retard.

Bullshit, Zok closed the site due to his PI. Nothing else. Trust me i talked to him on IRC several times.
-
...accounts got approved in a day or two and all the ad spammers were kept out.
More bullshit. For over a year, new signups were constantly asking why their accounts were still unable to post after waiting days or weeks, and that's just the ones who could somehow make the contact to ask. The rest just fucked off because they couldn't be arsed waiting any longer for you fuckups to approve them.
-
Its just patently absurd that Psychomanthis has the audacity to claim that Zoklet's tactics "worked" in regard to registration....when its already been proven it was a failed model. Zok started with thousands of regulars, and ended up with dozens in the end. And exactly what happened? The site had to be closed because of its failures and stupidity, and yet Psychomanthis thinks he has ANY answers at all in regard to how to "properly" run a BBS.
Use the Constanza Rule with anything Psychomanthis spews.....he was part of the higher echelon the last few years, and the "success" of Zoklet is all anyone needs to know how great his ideology and attitude will work for future BBS endeavors.
-
Jesus Christ, couldn't you have left your bullshit over at Zoklet? Listen up faggots, i'd be happy to engage you in a useless discussion about Zoklet and totse and whatever the fuck is on your mind. But let's keep this topic about the sign up process now shall we?

Wahhhhhh...poor Psychomanthis wants a clean slate and wants all his sins to be washed away. Sorry Jackass, all we are doing is showing YOUR FAILED WEBSITE and how YOUR FAILED TACTICS would end up doing this place a lot more harm then good. Seriously EVERYONE hated the way you fools handled registration, yet you have the mind numbing audacity to come on here with a confident and authorative tone as if it "worked".
How fuckin daft and dumb can you possibly be?]

You already ruined one website people liked posting on. Excuse us if we don't wish for the same thing to happen to this one.
-
Ain't it funny how he is STILL trying to tell people to "keep it on topic". He really and truly just can NOT help himself. Poor little former moderator is gonna be eaten alive, he's scared shitless and reaching for his gun....yet he still forgets he is shooting blanks over here.
Hey Psychomanthis....why not crawl back to Zoklet and go moderate something why you still have the chance. Clearly you need the fix, and your stash is about to run out forever. ELL OH FUCKIN ELL @ you. 8)
-
We've been exactly on topic with all our comments. This retard makes a retarded suggestion about the registration process and we make a suggestion about how he should shut the fuck up about suggestions about the registration process and also include with our reasons why we disagree with his proven retarded suggestions. That's totally on topic, whether anybody likes it or not.
-
I voted for open registration.

Don't do this, it was awful and a big part of what was killing Zoklet. A day or two is more than enough time for a person to lose interest, and it often took longer (did for me, anyway). This sort of thing just seems like creating extra work where there need be none for the sake of it.
No images under 100 posts. Problem pretty much solved, with the global mods we have now and Arnox there too. Anything that requires tons of mods to function isn't functioning properly, and we should be doing all we can to limit the number of mods so we can grow to be something different (hopefully better) than zoklet.
The users are tired of administrative cliques. Let's just all simply be good posters and friends :)

This would work as well, given that the registrations would be open with this feature i would prefer this.

Herp. Derp. AND. Slobber.
So at the end of the day when all his FAILED arguments are shoved right back down his throat, all the little bitch can do is fall onto some silly meme. How very Zoklet of you. ;)

Why don't you just dele... oops, wrong site!
Spec's right. I once tried making alt accounts from other people's computers with sensible user names, etc... several weeks later they still weren't approved. Zoklet user activity was consistently declining to the point where you conceded your own forum wasn't worth posting in, yet still you kept that shit-eating smile saying that everything was heading in the right direction despite providing stats that clearly said it wasn't! Zoklet's closure isn't your fault, but Psycho-'happy to justify admin policy'-mantis, amongst others, telling anyone who pointed out the obvious that they were full of herp-derp bullshit contributed to its decline.
The point here is that Admins or mods approving new accounts is fine, in principle, if they can do it very swiftly. As in 24hrs, not 24 days.
-
I voted open registration over the invite system. If you can disable images for at least the first 20 posts (most of the bots stopped around 15 that I noticed), then that would be nice, but I think we can try open and then adjust accordingly.
The DoS attacks stopped, hopefully the CP attackers will too.
-
one way or the other you really shouldn't leave them closed much longer especially when you have a large amount of people looking for somewhere to post right now
-
Registration was only blocked two days ago. Zanick registered on the 6th, and today's the 8th.
http://www.intosanctuary.com/index.php?action=mlist;sort=registered;start=0;desc
-
I like the probation period or dipshit catcher we had on &t2, where you HAD to post in introductions and couldn't start threads...I think the 5 posts was extremely low, but that idea works.
I like the idea someone mentioned of not having .jpg available...also probably double or triple the flood limiter.
also have an admin button to unlock the account.
-
But the Zoklet kidiots are so hardened and experienced and determined that they would skate circles around anything you might setup. Ask anyone from Zoklet who isn't a kidiot and they will wholeheartedly agree. The only real effective thing you can do is simply just good old-fashioned, manual moderation and a case by case basis handling, just like the old days. You won't be able to "shortcut" this one, not by a long shot.
-
Alright, guys. Here's how it going to fortunately and unfortunately be.
The bad news is:
- I can't make it to where the [img] BBCode is restricted to certain members. There was a mod for it but it only works with SMF versions 1.1.9 and lower... We have 2.0.8, the latest. The best I can do is make it to where you guys can set manually in your profile whether you want to see images or not. I can also restrict [img] BBCode entirely but that's a blanket ban and I don't wanna do that unless we're under attack of course. There was a mod as well that works with our site that can restrict images and links to certain posters in their sigs. But again, that only covers sigs. Ultimately, we're just gonna have to Captcha our registration and stay vigilant for now.
The good news:
- Registration is now open. No invite system.
- I can make it to where if your post count is under a certain threshold, posting anything requires filling out a Captcha every time. But it is a pain though.
-
Reading thru these various posts amazes me how something so basic and trivial as site registration is being made into a god awful cluster fuck fest.
The only suggestion i have is stop making the simple things hard

Not my cup of tea
Thats what mods are for. Delete the posts and posters.

Is there a way to disable IMG code, but still enable videos? Just to play devil's advocate for a minute...now "necessary" is it to really post pictures? I understand depending on the topics it may be helpful to post a pic for a schematic or some other useful tool in a guide of sorts, but nowadays videos seem to be a more streamlined and efficient way to go that route any how.
The reason I ask is because I've felt for a while now that part of the "dumbing down" of many BBSs is people coming along just posting a pic or some tired old meme, instead of actually typing out an original and legitimate opinion. I think that is when Totse's quality started to crumble, when any fool can come in 4-chan style and post a pic as their contribution(?), and add nothing to else to the conversation. Kinda separates the men from the boys, that kind of thing.
-

We did but our brains are still scarred forever. We can't delete the pain.

snip
Yes, there is, but doing so would blow. Images have always been a staple for most all forums. Taking them out would be taking major functionality out. And also, sometimes an image just says it all.
-
Then you solved the problem. Any mental anguish is the result of hiring mods that dont have sufficient intestinal fortitude. The Internet isnt filled with warm sunshine and prettyflowers. No. Its shit, vomit, and sharp pointy objects covered in rust and festering bodily wastes that have no other purpose than to impale your eyeballs.
To the sissys cant handle it I suggest crawling back up into mommies vagina where youll be nice and warm and safe.
Until her boyfriends show up and start banging on your head with their own sharp pointy object thats going to cover you in its bodily fluids
-
It was pretty bad, and depending on the method used, the "remove topic" button is at the bottom of the page.
Knowing this corner of the internet though, there are some dudes that got their rocks off to it.

I didn't read through all of the replies, but open an invite only registration would kill the traffic.
I think open registration with a quiz that requires users to type in answers would help protect the board legally. Having people actually type in an answer for a question like "How would you ask for information on shoplifting from Walmart?", and rejecting answers like "How can I shoplift from Walmart?", would help filter out conspiracy.
Admin/Mods would have to look over the answers though.

We need to do something though.

You're just seeing it late at night. During the day, it's pretty busy here. Especially when you consider that everyone's got school and the like to wake up to.
-
I don't get this idea that putting up a captcha or challenge question is gonna stop these stupid fucks. All they're gonna do is manually get around that in a matter of seconds by manually entering the required information and then posting the CP manually right after that. The truth is, YOU CAN'T STOP THEM WITH AUTOMATED SHORTCUTS! They're on solid proxies or they wouldn't be posting that shit. They're not using bots to do it either. The single and only way you can truly stop them is to have a present and active moderation team who kills their posts within seconds of posting it. That means you have to have at least two staff members sitting on ALL the posts like a spider on a web waiting patiently for the next fly to land. Yes, people have lives and it's a busy world, but there's absolutely no reason you cannot have at least two staff members thoroughly and continuously surfing the new threads and acting as your eye in the sky. If the shitbirds can't keep the pics up for more than a couple of minutes, they're fucked. There's no shortcut in this. There's no work-around in this. This situation definitely requires an old-school solution. Solid moderation is the only possible way to combat this effectively... period. I would recommend one member from the current staff, one of you who has the ability to be on here perpetually with integrity and without excuse during the night, and a trusted non-current member be promoted to handle continuous monitoring of new threads and posts during the day. Both should be full global moderators with full powers. I would strongly recommend DaGuru or Slave of the Beast for that position, since they have already proven themselves to be highly dependable and both have huge amounts of integrity and sensibility when the chips are down, and even when they aren't down. They are both more than capable. For the holidays and away vacation time of those two watchers, I would suggest take on a third capable and proven trustworthy non-current staff member to fill those holes - someone who is already known to be completely trustworthy and has integrity. I would highly recommend 'Ed Rush for that job. Between the three of you, there's no reason whatsoever this situation cannot be completely resolved once and for all. If the kiddie fiddlers can't keep their CP on the boards for longer than a minute or two, they're fucked royally. That right there is their Achilles heel in all this, so exploit it for all it's worth, because that's all you can really do and still allow the member-base to grow and expand.

We need to do something though.
Ghost towns get more traffic then this place
You're just seeing it late at night. During the day, it's pretty busy here. Especially when you consider that everyone's got school and the like to wake up to.
Can you break it down to what times are more busier?
If you can,can you advise of busiest times EST as i am only 5 hours ahead of that

The single and only way you can truly stop them is to have a present and active moderation team who kills their posts within seconds of posting it. there is nothing that gives the impression you have any qualifications whatsoever to make recommendations on anyones abilities or integrity

Let's just go ahead and take your word for it, amirite?
Shut. Up.

a better option would be to absolutely prohibit anyone you recommend from any position other than on their knees, based on your own ineptitude and obvious lack of ability
dont waste all that head movement. open wide and you can make your useless self slightly less useless. if youre good i might even give you a protein drink

As I suggested before, blacklisting disposable email providers would seriously inconvenience anyone scripting or even manually performing spam attacks. Nothing will completely stop a smart and dedicated attacker, but you can make their job a lot more difficult.
-
You could set it up so that when someone clicks the REPORT button, it automatically temporarily blocks others from seeing the post until a moderator inspects it.

A fatal flaw in your plan: practically everyone uses disposable e-mail providers.

That's just asking to be abused.

I prefer to use them when I can. But most forums block them specifically to prevent spam.

That's just asking to be abused.
Then the button could be disabled for those that abuse it. Maybe enable the button after 100 posts.
