Title: Decent laptop specs for games?
Post by: Soso0 on September 05, 2014, 10:00:17 pm
So I'm not much of a tech person and feel like I should be able to get some help here. I am looking into purchasing a new laptop. I have credit to spend and shit in the world is getting bad so I might as well spend some before shit hits the fan right? What type of specs would I need to run most games at decent speeds and does the brand really matter? I am not a big gamer but I would like to be able to torrent some games, not have it lag all the time like my current laptop and be able to play HD videos with no problem. I am hoping to find something decent under $500, I have up to $1000 credit limit but I am planning on buying my mom one too so I need to buy two. I am just sick of having cheap shitty laptops that can't run games for shit.

You aren't going to buy anything decent with $500. Ask the credit company to raise your limit. For $1000 you are getting into mid-entry level gaming laptops.
With that said if you are willing to spend a little more look into a macbook. My i7 radeon 6800 (i think? too lazy to check) MBP plays any modern games smoothly on normal settings. Depends on the game but I can usually crank them up a bit too. This thing is a couple of years old too.
If you aren't looking to spend that much money then maybe think about building a desktop it will be much cheaper.

Dektop for gaming. Build, don't buy.
To the person who suggested a mac, kill yourself.

Well like I mentioned I'm not looking into hardcore gaming. So I don't need some fancy equipment. My brother got an HP laptop idk about the specs but it's able to play gta 4, warface and some other games decently.

Classic "I'm too poor to own one so I'll hate on it/them instead."
What's wrong with Macs? Beautiful build quality, top of the line hardware (the same type of stuff you'd find in a high end pc) and it runs Windows and Ubuntu flawlessly.

Yeah, it's really smart to drop $2k on a glossy screen and last year's hardware in a sealed case when you could buy a fully loaded, enterprise grade Thinkpad T540 for the same price.
Macs are engineering for consumers with more money than brains.
Also, Ubuntu is Linux for faggots. Use a real distro and then I might start taking you seriously. But so far everything you have said in this thread is confirmation that you should kill yourself.

The problem with gaming laptops is over heating.
for $500 you could make yourself a PC that will run just about everything on high settings no problem

Yeah, I own plenty of computers, including a 2009 macbook that was purchased new, and run a repair business. I still wouldn't waste another cent on apple products.
If you:
a) Are a faggot and/or a hipster b) Have no desire to ever manually upgrade or replace any component, including the battery, or even open the case c) Don't mind paying a premium for 'high end' hardware that's often close to a year behind every PC manufacturer d) Can deal with the fact that a T540 is 10x the machine for less money, and just want a shiny status symbol with a big apple logo on the case
Then by all means, buy a Mac. Do it faggot, then kill yourself.

I should of stated from the beginning that I want nothing to do with macs. Microcenter should have these in stock by next monday http://www.microcenter.com/product/428809/Inspiron_15_156_Laptop_Computer_-_Black_Matte_with_Textured_Finish
Would it be fine for LIGHT gaming? I don't really care about playing games in the highest setting either that's for rich people. I am also considering buying a new camera to just record videos as sort of a hobby and plan on installing video editing programs, would they run smoothly? Cause they would be slow on my past shitty laptops.

I'd avoid it because of the 1366x768 ("HD") display. This is far too low for a 15" laptop. Everything will appear large and you will have very little screen real estate, making it difficult to multitask. A ULV Haswell i3 with HD4400 graphics will be fine for most things, but you'll only be able to run modern games on low settings. The 5400RPM hard drive will be slow and bottleneck the system.
For under $500 you won't find much better in a new system.

I have plenty and also have the good sense not to drop it on apple's overpriced garbage. especially for gaming - there are still too many titles that don't have OSX support.

not so much lately. I used to have an Asus g73jh - it has vents on the back (as opposed to the bottom and side like most)and high-powered fans that keep it cool (applies to the majority of Asus's G range), and my new Gigabyte p34gv2 has the same setup, even though it's literally a third of the size. I haven't had any overheating issues since my old Lenovo T-something from like... 6 years ago.

Lol you obviously are either lying about owning a repair business or own the worst one ever. I am a repair tech myself and I regularly upgrade and repair macs. In fact I would go so far as to say they are easier to work on than most regular pc laptops, 6 screws the bottom panel comes off and you have access to everything. Everything inside is serviceable and upgradable in fact I swapped out my optical drive for an hdd drive bay and have a 500gb Samsung evo ssd in that slot as well as one in my main drive bay. I also upgraded my ram to 16gb with ram I pulled out of one of my hp laptops.
So either you are lying or you don't know shit and have no right working on other people's devices or both. I have to clean up "repairs" from people like you all the time. If you don't know what you are taking about then fuck off.

2012 and newer MBP and MBA models are nearly impossible for the user to service or upgrade. The battery is glued in place, the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board and cannot be replaced, the SSD is proprietary and thus incompatible with all other consumer drives. Even the case screws are tamper resistant and most people don't own the pentalobe driver necessary to remove them. These machines are designed to be serviced by apple techs ONLY.
As for my shop, we don't work on apple shit, because neither of us are apple certified, and even opening the case of a recent model will void the warranty. Our business is exclusively PC driven. You OTOH should not be placing a finger upon any machine that isn't destined for the trash can, as you are so clearly full of shit and most certainly lack any kind of experience or certification. You are a worthless piece of human garbage, zok.jr. Stop lying on the internet and kill yourself immediately.

Oh wow battery glued in place how could that ever be removed? I also service phones and refurbish samsung super amoled displays so a little bit of glue doesn't phase me son. The SSD's in the MBPRs and MBAs are not proprietary they are PCI based which is anything but proprietary. Sure the ram chips are onboard but so is the video chipset on most PC laptops but I don't hear you crying about that.
Honestly from what you have written I highly HIGHLY doubt you own any business whatsoever let alone a PC repair one since pretty much everything you have stated is personal opinion or just plain wrong.
Also LOL @ certifications did you get your A+ I bet you are really good at setting up SCSI drives and floppy disks like seriously wtf you are an idiot.

Just get something cheap with at least a dual core rated around 2.7Ghz, and drop at least 8 GB of RAM, usually will be an integrated video card. Not too powerful but at minimum get something that has ati something with "hd" at the end.
You'll be able to play games up until around mid 2013 on at least low. No more than $450. I wouldn't recommend hp build quality but I had no hand in picking the laptop I have now, just look at the specs and know that it can handle 2013 Tomb Raider. It's an hp 2000 or something to that effect
It can handle it on low at around 25 fps by the way, nerds won't be happy, but oh well.

By the average consumer, it can't be done without risking significant damage. You of course wouldn't know, as your sarcastic and evasive response indicates that you've never worked on one.

RAM upgrades in notebooks are extremely common, GPU upgrades are not. But keep trying to justify being stuck with 4 or 8GB of RAM for the life of your system.

What kind of games are you planning on?
Well I just bought a laptop last week. Sim games for the most part. Nothing like Crysis. I just wanted to play them in high detail without having them lag. This new one is doing a fine job. I got an Intel Core i5-420CPU at 1.70GHz With 8GB of Ram with Intel HD Graphics 4000

Those specs are incorrect. The i5-400 series is from the Arrandale generation, which is 4 years old and came with Intel HD graphics. HD4000 is 2 generations newer and only integrated into Ivy Bridge dies.
I think you actually have an i5-3317U. This is an Ivy Bridge ULV CPU that should work just fine for most purposes. AMD integrated graphics chips are typically a bit better for gaming, but the HD4000 is no slouch, and Intel CPUs are vastly superior for most other tasks.
What's the screen resolution? If you only payed $500 then I'd expect a glossy 1366x768 display, which I find atrocious and completely unusable for anything other than gaming and watching videos in a dark room. If this is the case then I'd say you got an average deal.

Anyone who uses laptops for gaming doesn't deserve a laptop. They aren't built for them no matter what the corrupt officials say. I have 2 laptops both i5, silver with Chicklet keyboards. I would never dream of gaming on them. Not even for minecraft. I only buy silver laptops that're thin and with chicklet keyboards LOL
P.S I sign all my laptops and shit with my ALT (signature.) Because one day they will be in a museum for some reason and I will be famous (not always for the right reason ;)

What's the screen resolution? If you only payed $500 then I'd expect a glossy 1366x768 display, which I find atrocious and completely unusable for anything other than gaming and watching videos in a dark room. If this is the case then I'd say you got an average deal.
SoSo0 why not run belarc screen shot the print out and it will be easier to tell you whether you got store raped or good deal....
