crowdfunding scam
« on: November 29, 2014, 07:07:14 pm »
It seems to me that there's been some instances where people got crowdfunded a lot of money for dubious reasons. There was some gay kid in the retarded south somewhere that made a video of him coming out to his redneck family and the ensuing fight. Anyways he got kicked out of his house and set up a crowdfund thing and got like 100k from dumbass redditors/facebookers. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to pull something similar, right? You could even do it completely legally. The kid that got kicked out of his house (if it were a scam) wouldn't be committing any sort of fraud. People just gave him money due to his family's reaction.

Anyone thought about this?

Just create a random one on there or kickstarter and see what happens and report back

Yea but no ones gonna donate to some random kickstarter. They need some viral video or some other reasoning behind it to get the big $$$.

This. An incident similar to the redneck family/gay kid scenario could be staged. As long as nobody admits anything there is no way they can prove it was staged just be sure not to allot the money for any one specific thing (like "getting my own place"). Just something like "support" for said victim.

With the big K crowdfunding site, you can only receive sponsors if you reach your goal. One trick is to have enough cash on hand to completely fund the project yourself. You'll lose a few % points but you'll get to keep all of the other sponsored monies.
