Saw a girl once of about 21 sobbing while crouched down and huddled up in the cold rain in front of the convenience store. I passed her $20 and told her to hit the Tim Hortons down the street for a hot bowl of soup and a coffee. She stood up, thanked me while wiping away tears, and then asked me if I happened to have another $20. I came an inch away from snatching the $20 in her hand I had just given her, but I just gave her an evil look without saying anything and she said "sorry about that", then walked away in the direction opposite of the Tim Hortons.

Another time I saw a girl of about 17 hitchhiking in the roughest part of China Town. She looked fucked up and lost. I walked over and gave her a full sheet of bus tickets (about $12) and told her it wasn't safe to hitchhike there, pointed to the bus stop going her way, gave her the time the bus would arrive. When I walked back across the street, I looked back and she had begun hitchhiking again and hadn't moved. I thought about going over and grabbing the tickets back, but I just shook my head instead and went on my way.

One time I saw a dude by the nick of zok post on his BBS that he was really hard up for money and having trouble keeping the BBS up and running. I send him $50 because I felt bad for him and he looked like he was genuinely trying to help out. A few years later, he sent a goon squad after me and personally put in a permaban on my account because I was constantly, privately and publicly criticizing his treatment of others, even though I hadn't broken a single house rule. Never got my money back either. Zok now owes me $50. ;)

Once I went to Wendy's, and a bum met me outside the door.  He said I looked well-dressed and started chatting me up.  Following me inside, he said he was hungry and just wanted a couple bucks to get some chicken nuggets.  I was a sucker and gave him a couple bucks.  Then he asked someone else for a little bit more to get a meal or something.  Once he got his cash, he hurried outside and ran across the street to the liquor store, without ordering his chicken nuggets.  Really changed my perception of bums.

Just a month or two ago, I was cleaning out my car at a car wash around 10 o'clock at night.  Then I saw a dude and his kid - I put him around 9 years old - looking inside all of the vacuum cleaners.  I tried not to pay attention to them, and when I look back up, the kid is hanging on my door.  I said "hey there" to him and then his dad said "not that one, go on to the next one."  When they kept going, I was a little concerned.  I asked them if they needed help finding something.  The dad said he's just looking for change.  A bum is one thing, but making your 9-year-old son dig in vacuum cleaners for change at 10 PM on a school night is just not right.

After my prior bum story, I decided that I wouldn't give a bum anything without finding out his story first.  So I did.  I asked the dad what was going on.  He said he and his son got kicked out of his girlfriend's house and they have nowhere to go.  I asked if he tried the local homeless shelter we have in town (we have a really nice one), but he said they were already closed.  He said he's disabled and has a metal plate in his arm and can't work for some reason.  I didn't buy the not able to work part, and more than pity for him, I was just frustrated that he had provided that kind of life for his kid.

He said they were hungry, so I said I might have a snack or something in my car.  I usually do since I have a 2 year old son.  Unfortunately, I just had dum dums, so I gave them a few.  I went back to cleaning my car, and I felt bad as they continued to dig in the vacuums.  I decided to open my wallet, and I just had one dollar on me (I rarely carry much cash).  I gave him the dollar and said that was all I had.  The dad was pretty excited and said he could go see this lady that sells donuts and get something to eat.  Man, I felt bad for the kid.  I probably should have driven them to McDonald's or something and used my debit card, but I didn't think about it.  Plus you don't want to feed a problem or else it'll never get better.

I told my wife about it when I got home, and she said if a cop had seen them out there then they would have taken the kid away from him.  She works with kids and has unfortunately had encounters with DHS before.

To answer the OP, the most I've given a bum is $5 for gas.  And I pumped the gas into their car to make sure that's what it went to.

The least I've given a bum is nothing.

I sometimes gives bums who are clearly mentally insane a few smokes.

I don't give jack shit to the ones who aren't clearly insane. Fuck them. The only acceptable excuse to be begging for money is that you are bat shit crazy. And even then, I would never give them actual money. Just on principal. I might give them food or smokes but not actual money, they are just going to go buy drugs with it. I want to punch people in the face who give the homeless money, that just makes the problem worse. Don't give the homeless anything and they will eventually die, go away, or get a job. Give the homeless lots of money and they will be homeless forever and it will spawn more homeless people. Kind of like how we keep giving food to africa so their population increases and they are even more dependent on charity. It should be made illegal to give aid to africa. Sure, this generation of Africans would be completely fucked and most would die, but then the survivors could built actual countries and prosper in the future. Currently, we just make shit worse their every year, and its going to keep on going and going until the system drastically changes. Fuck, even the bible got this one right, and the bible went full retard. Give a man to fish and he will beg you fish every day for the rest of his life and have 7 kids. Teach a man to fish and he will leave you the fuck alone. Or something like that anyways.

^ who are you from zoklet?

anyways most was like this gift bag of new clothes that unfortunately probably didn't fit the woman. also in it were some beers.

the least was this shirt i had bought from gap and felt like giving it to a hobo. i pulled over to him and he was like it prob won't fit. for some reason in my head i was like, yeah it'll fit, even when it probably wouldn't, and made him keep it anyways. i kinda felt bad about it lol.

A lot of homeless people have serious mental disorders.  My former boss used to find them, bring them in, and get the long process of getting them on government aid programs going.  We dealt with DFS quite a bit, unfortunately.  So many sad stories, like the one Idio told :(

It's a fight with those people, too.  Even working with DFS for supervised visitation is a struggle, once the kids have been taken.  It's so awful we have these well-meaning organizations tearing loving families families apart.  Sometimes it's necessary for sure, but there are truly heartbreaking cases.

Anyway, yeah.  Homeless people don't need our pity or scorn; they need compassionate help.  There are still so so many homeless veterans, even those who served in the recent wars.  Men and women with terrible PTSD and serious physical ailments, sometimes drinking their problems.  Quite a few people I've worked with were formerly homeless veterans.  Some sad stuff, man.  I don't really see it getting better anytime soon, either.  In my state we've actually been cutting the programs that help these people get back on their feet in the name of fiscal responsibility.

ahh, the timeless conundrum of one "giving nothing." Are we in a continuous state of giving nothing to everyone around us, by default? Can I take nothing and hand it to you? Is nothing subjective? Could you have denied a beggar any of your possessions thus 'giving him/her nothing' but perhaps having given him/her something, from their perspective, to the tune of: "he didn't give me anything but in doing so, he gave me the greatest gift of all- (insert emotion/idea/concept)"
