"free" car
« on: November 16, 2014, 04:14:58 am »
I got offered a 1984 Pontiac Fiero SE for free or very cheap.

as with any "Free" car, it needs a shit-ton of work...it was pulled out of service when it developed "an engine noise" which could be a tap, or it could be a knock...then it sat for 6 years.

at bare-minimum its going to need tires and a fuel pump to even be a roller...

this one has the 2.8 V6 and the Muncie 4 speed trans.

I looked at it as best I could, it looks like its been stored inside, and there was a cat in this shed, so no mouse problems...here are pics of it.

here is the car where it currently sits. this is where I found it

lol@ the giant $5 pyle sub right next to the driver

camaro steering wheel with airbag...on a car without airbag sensors??

I think this pile made like 76 hp factory

notice the 200mph speedo. this car would have originally have had a 55mph speedo, someone took the time to replace that

dat wrap around tach

shitty pic but it has a sunroof

the brakes and the clutch still have hydraulic pressure, and the tires still hold air. the brakes have surface rust, but will machine out.

also, it apparently has $1000 thrown into the suspension...I haven't had a chance to climb under it, but I don't think the dude would lie. why would he lie when its pretty much "come and get it"

what do I do with this thing? its pretty much rust free, and with any fiero...its only a home for whatever monster engine you want to stuff in it...in a perfect world, I would stick a 3.4 DOHC in it, and just DD it until the wheels fall off, but I don't have much for a shop right now.

also, the 4 speed can hold much more power than the 5 speed

A-sell it as a roller
B-find another GM 60 degree V6 and make it run-drive it
C-find another GM 60 degree V6 and make it run-sell it
D-find a Cadillac NorthStar, or an L67 (3.8 90 degree V6-supercharged) and swap it.

I have no interest in turning it into a ferrari/lambo knock off

here is one with a 3.8 supercharged in it...because the fiero is so light, it doesn't take a huge amount of power to make it fly...they are also corner machines, so power isn't that much of a priority anyways

Back in the day, I really hated the Fiero. Always was an MR2 fan. But regardless, it is a mid engined sports car and you could make an interesting project out of it. Can't argue with "free or cheap" either. Do an improbable engine swap and make it cool? How much could you hope to get out of that thing with minimal effort? I don't know what the market value for them is where you are, you should probably find out. You could even -gasp- restore it.

As an aside, I checked out Craigslist to see what they were going for in Vancouver. I just wanted to share this lulzy post:

$11,500??????

I think I'm going to find a good 2.8 in the junk yard and just make it run for now...after I get an adapter plate, harness, motor, PCM...it will add up fast, plus I don't have anywhere to fix it.

that craigslist ad is lulzy, I mean, I could see 5k...but 11.5? forget it.

Did somebody cut the fenders out on that thing? I don't remember the wheel wells being quite that open.

If that guy in the youtube video had wings attached to the sides, that car probably would have taken off.. literally. I used to like to Fiero.. My enthusiasm has dwindled as I've aged. You never can go wrong with a free car though, running or otherwise. I'd definitely do a switch and keep it.. they are kinda rare.. shouldnt be too hard to make it nice.. I'd just be careful.. I'm so iffy about small cars anymore because running head on into anything is bound to flatten it.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.
