I have a place that does auctions around here for cheap cars and vehicles. Would that be a good place to find something for a good price?

craigslist.

be ready to jump on it when one comes up. lowball whoever is selling it, repost it for 1.5 times the price you paid, and don't take any less than that.

I would say buy a broken one and fix it, there is WAY more money in that...but you don't know anything about cars

Yes and no. A lot of the cars that go at auction are reposessed. I've seen a ton of them that were really fucked up by the previous owner knowing that the vehicle was going to be taken. I strongly recommend bringing someone with you that knows a lot more about cars than you do. Have them look for signs of abuse, crashes, water in the oil and other potential huge problems. Also, it is a good idea to buy into the CarFax thing so you can look up VIN numbers on a smartphone for details of wrecks, salvage or other records pertaining to the car. Finally, get set up with a Blue Book so you can gauge the average prices for the car in your area. Based on the going prices and the status of the car, set yourself a maximum price you're willing to pay for it at auction. Don't go over it.

I'd look to sell a car from auction for 95% of Blue Book for a quicker sale. Consider dropping to 90% after a couple weeks if no takers. Set your purchase price where you want it to give you enough money back after doing all the paperwork, a quick service and the legwork getting the car sold.

Most auctions have a preview the day before, or very early the day of the auction. Go there at that time and do your research. Most auctions will start with the high priced cars first. They will go for near retail price mostly, but eventually the people looking for those types of cars will be done and the price of them will drop off. I've seen $40,000 cars go for $12,000 range at this point. This is where you can make serious bank if you have the funds up front to do it. After those cars, they start into lower priced stuff. If you're not into the luxury car market, you could probably sleep through the first 90 minutes of the auction.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

bluebook is meaningless for used cars. its an excuse for used car dealers to charge you a fortune more than some POS is worth.

auctions are great, just do a solid preview of everything there, and if one isn't generating much interest, you know what it is, what its worth, and if its worth jumping on.

Flipping stuff on craigslist works for just about anything that regularly sells for a few hundred or more. If you know something about anything that fits that description you can bump your profit margin. When I was in highschool I would buy old or broken computers, shuffle parts around until I got something working and slap it in a new-ish lighted case and resale for way more than the parts cost. You can lie about specs because no one checks desktop computers, or you can be honest and just wait a little longer for an idiot to respond based on the shiny photos.

Also buying cheap ass chinese tablets or netbooks and reselling on CL works well.

Buy something that can be cleaned up very very well, most people care about looks.

I've bought some cheap cars, cleaned and detailed them very well. Did some small stuff like a tune up and made some easy money.

Tax time is coming.

The vehicle thing is actually a very good idea. Did that for months and made a living on it. That shit works. Don't even necessarily need to fuck with odometer as long as you can make everything presentable.
