Immortality

http://guardianlv.com/2014/07/how-close-are-humans-to-immortality/

What do you guys think about immortality? I was thinking about it just now, and my argument always used to be that people need to die to prevent overpopulation, but really, what's to say we won't be able to occupy Mars or the Moon by then?

Would you make yourself "immortal"? When would be your cue to die? How long would you go on?

Personally, I'd do it, and I think I'd hang on for the ride and explore the galaxy if it ever becomes a reality.

We're eternal already.  We don't need immortality.

It's not "immortality" it would just be taking away the ability to die via old age or sickness.

Still if I didn't get sick and just lived on yeah sure seeing how advanced civilization gets and being able to live centuries would be all fun and great but outliving all your friends, then each generation having like a new life, getting a new set of friends and acquaintances, after the 4th or 5th set of "lifetimes" it would turn into torture

But it's not like you'd be the only "immortal" either. You'd have "immortal" friends, and you could pull your own plug at any time. I see what you mean though, I was thinking about how my wife probably wouldn't get it so I'd have to not only watch her die, but watch her remains eventually be dug up and developed over.

The kingdom of god is already Inside you.

No it isn't because it doesn't exist.

I'd rather kill myself... provided that doing so would still be possible.  Probably with a big bang so the nano robots can't put me back together.

I don't want life to end, but I suspect insanity would await many who live for extreme lengths of time. The human mind didn't evolve to exist forever.

We're eternal already.  We don't need immortality.

I think this thread is for people who don't believe in fairies.

Everything would become insignificant after a while. If you lived to say, 1,200, a 30 year marriage would seem about as long as a bachelor party. I guess one benefit would be that you could amass wealth/do/create things that you otherwise wouldn't have time to do if you were mortal.

I would probably choose to be immortal given the option but no way I could continue on forever, I'd have to pull my own plug eventually, just my own theory but I think after a while you would go insane.

if we can fathom the idea of infinity then I would say our brains were designed for the 'long haul'

I always figured that infinity is just a theory at best, and could never really exist in this reality....because if there is an 'infinity' of anything, wouldn't that one thing 'crowd everything else out'?  I mean, if there was an infinity of something, where would there be room for the rest of existence?

Inside of that infinity?

This is cool and would give Sploo a shapegasm.

Everything is fractals and therefor infinite in itself.

The human brain starts to measurably deteriorate during the third decade of life.
