Chrono Cross is a meh game. Trigger is much better.. you can barely call cross a sequel. It's redeeming quality is the massive list of characters you can recruit. Tho, it all evens out so it DOESN'T MATTER who you choose to be in your team really.. guess just pick whose skin you like the best.
Mystic Quest is OK. I like it, but it's kinda bland. It's completely linear (no side quests) your team is always changing, it's got the classic "must save 4 crystals or earth is destroyed" theme.. It was good for the time. Story isn't that bad. Game mechanics leave alot to be desired.. So basically it's not great but it's worth a play through.
FF7 owns bro you should play it again. I've beaten it so many times.. now adays when I play it I don't even really beat it. Caz Sephiroth is SO easy compared to the real bosses of the game (optional) Ruby and Emerald weapons.
U play FF8? That one is my favorite. the stat system is a little tricky to get used to but once you get it down it's the most customizable FF there is. Any character can do anything you want (Physical, magic, summons, items). The story is great, too. I think it's the graphics that turn alot of people off... I hated the game when it first came out, for years. Then when I actually played thru and beat it I realised how stupid I was.
Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are my favorite SNES rpgs right along with Chrono Trigger, I would suggest those if you want to play another good turn based RPG. Man that was the golden age.
Oooo another good lesser known RPG for SNES is Star Ocean. It was never released in the USA. It came out RIGHT before ps1 hit the markets thus it uses a bitchin graphics card. It even has VOICE ACTORS. It's a good, long story. n you can have many different party members as well. In fact you gain/lose party members based on actions in the game and answers you give to questions. Some characters are only available if you have/don't have certain ppl in your party. Then there's the skill system where you can learn A TON of different abilities such as cooking, music, painting, alchemy, blacksmithing, etc etc which makes for awesome customization. Like I said it was never released in the US but because it's so good you can download an SNES rom with a translation added to it.
As far as psx.. there's alot of "meh" rpgs.. that's around the time the industry started caring more about graphics than actual game play/story.
FF tactics is really fun. The story confuses me alot of the time tho. Also used to hate this game but once you get going it is really fun (I play on emulator with speed increased caz the default speed is too slow). Lot of customization here, too. It's like Tactics Ogre if you ever played that. You can pick between like 15 different classes.
