Some word on what we're doing currently...
« on: October 24, 2014, 05:46:19 pm »
Over the course of these months, it has slowly but surely come to my attention that we're in dire need of some major changes here. Luckily though, those changes are about to come. Right now, we don't have any set date on when we plan on rolling all these changes out or even what changes exactly that we want but here's a list of what I'm tentatively planning.

- A full site rules rewrite. (Actually, expect this for sure.)
- Upgrades to NIMF to have it function as it did before (threads in it don't appear in Recent Topics or in the unread posts link) and also to make it a sort of spam forum people will be able to post in. (Very probable.)
- Multi-quoting feature. (Very probable.)
- More smilies. Anywhere from 3 to 25. (Maybe.)

I didn't think any of these were really needed before but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, that's what's going on right now and that's pretty much all I know at the moment. I will be sure to post a full announcement when everything's ready.

Time is always against you in some way or another.

I knew it would be like 'arnox comes down from the mountain, tablet in hand, ready to issue his edicts in a thunderous voice' or some gay shit like that......

Really hope I don't get in trouble for posting this too soon, but it's time we got out of M&A or whatever the place is called here and into the real forum.  This is just my opinion as a new moderator and poster.  I don't speak for Arnox or the other mods.  Nothing is set in stone.  This is like the early stages of getting stuff done, and you're invited to the brain storming session.  We're talking, and that's all for now.  Arnox of course has final say.  What I think about some of Arnox's tentative plans:

- A full site rules rewrite. (Actually, expect this for sure.)

I feel we should make a new rule.  Something akin to, "No making posts detrimental to the website".  Only enforce this rule in cases of obvious repeat offenders, and make sure the users know this is the case.  Spamming staff hate threads does nothing positive for the website and actually chases members away.  I totally get the concerns about free speech, but if something isn't done a vocal minority might kill the website for all of us.  There are other ways to voice your opinions than loud, nonsensical, repetitive spam.

Hopefully no one would be banned, and everyone would continue along being awesome contributors and all that good stuff.

This is just my opinion!  The other staff members may disagree or have their own suggestions, and nothing is set in stone just yet.

- Upgrades to NIMF to have it function as it did before (threads in it don't appear in Recent Topics or in the unread posts link) and also to make it a sort of spam forum people will be able to post in. (Very probable.)

If we're going to have 3 general discussion forums, I feel they should each have a clearly defined purpose.  SG is of course the "serious" general discussion forum, and NIMF is a potential newcomer with uncertain rules.

HB should be as I remember it from totse: basically without rules.  Things like cp, making threats against the website, etc. would of course not be allowed, but I do not see a reason for making NIMF into this forum when Half Baked already exists.  Posters should not be infracted for writing contentless posts, or trolling, or being drunk while in HB.

Half Baked seems to have had a different purpose on totse2, and this seems to have resulted in some minor culture shock for posters and administration here on Sanctuary.  From what I can gather, HB on totse2 was a less serious general forum than SG but still had more rules than the totse HB.  Meaning contentless or super drunk posts were not allowed.

In this instance, I believe the administration should adopt the rules the Zoklet crowd is used to, and accept HB in all its original glory.

- Multi-quoting feature. (Very probable.)

Sure!  Why not? :P

- More smilies. Anywhere from 3 to 25. (Maybe.)

And finally, something I wrote in the M&A-type forum:

Meet them halfway on some things.  It may not make sense for there to be a "Retarded Thread" in BLTC, but it happened organically and became a fun part of their "culture".  Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems mostly innocent.  Like at least the posts there weren't as bad as the staff hate spam, and it's all confined to the one thread anyway.

Stopped reading your post at the line that suggests people with constructive criticism for the staff/policies shut up. You really don't know anything about genuine free speech.

Way to take initiative, eq.

Here's one of my posts regarding the discussion on SG/HB/NIMF:

SG is for general discussions and anything that doesn't fall into other categories.  I remember Metaphysicist defined a discussion as a thread that required more than a yes or no answer or more than a single-line answer.  For example, he would lock a thread that said, "Do you like to trick-or-treat?"  He would require it to say, "Do you like to treat-or-treat, and why?" or "What do you like or dislike about trick-or-treating?"  The thread would require a topic for discussion, with discussion being more than a one-liner.

HB, like it says, is for the lols.  It's for playing games, not being "serious," posting one-liners, incoherent posts with no clear topic or purpose, and really no discussion is required.  An SG thread would pass in HB, but an HB thread would not pass in SG.  However, general forum rules still apply (no spam, CP, PI, advertising, etc.)

NIMF means not-in-my-forum.  It is a step below HB because it can contain spam.  Spam can take the form of repeated images or text, incoherent babble (though this alone would be okay for HB), floods, or I would suppose anything that is not illegal and does not violate someone's protection or identity (meaning no CP, no PI, etc.).  I'm not sure about advertising - would need more clarity on that.  I would say allow it because this won't show up in Recent Topics.  The only moderating that would occur in NIMF would be to remove said illegalities (CP) or identity violations (PI).  Otherwise, it's the sandbox and you can throw it in each other's eyes.

To which I replied:

Have people been spamming pictures repeatedly, babbling nonsensically, or any of those things?  Even in HB I haven't seen much of it, and if it did happen I bet it would be the exception rather than the rule.  Telling people to post in NIMF seems like it might be something of a slap in the face, especially when we already have HB.  Would be cool to open up NIMF anyway, so people can continue posting in the threads that get moved there.  HB on totse and Zoklet was what you're suggesting NIMF be, but without the "trashcan" connotations.

*shrug*, what will happen will happen.  A lot is different here, and that takes some getting used to.

Here's a copy of totse2's rules before it went down. What do you guys think? What would you change?

What is the purpose of posting this stuff here?  Are you guys trying to make us feel as if we are 'participating' in something?  Just tell arnox to hurry up with whatever he is going to decide for us, and dispense with the happy horseshit reacharound.  I would tell him myself, but he doesn't seem to feel like interacting with me for some reason.
