Was reading about this in a 4X4 board a few years back, You can also use your car motor and pencil lead to silver solder wiring in a pinch apparently but it's a bit of a pain to not get the leads to break.

Whatever you got to do when you're up shit creek though.
Myself when my new hubs come and and my trucks back on the road I'm probably going to put my small oxy/ acet cutting torch in the back with a home made bracket and get a brazing tip for it.

Usually try to keep enough of a tool kit / spare parts to do a roadside fix for most problems. Comes with Ford ownership I guess.
