MMO roleplaying
« on: October 20, 2014, 07:17:50 pm »
Does anyone here like doing this?  I'm guessing no, but you never know.

In every MMO I've played my characters have all been roleplayed, most very lightly but some were pretty serious.  I haven't played a video game probably for over a year now, but am feeling that itch again.  The weird video HTS posted eventually lead me here:

I've been watching a lot this guy, and now I want to play WoW (ugh) again.  First bought the game on release date back in 2004, and ran a guild with my ex and a bunch of friends.  They were never into the RP thing at all, and no self respecting person would play a PvE server anyway, so of course we ended up on some random PvP server with absolutely no roleplayers.  Now I guess WoW has RP-PvP servers!  Which is awesome, even if WoW is responsible for ruining the genre.  So I'm really considering reinstalling WoW and seeing what happens.

Kind of want to be night elf, blood elf, or worgen; and I usually end up picking a healer class.

inb4 cats calls me a nerd! :P

I used to play a RP-intensive MUD. The quality of RP was incredibly high. Felt like being immersed in a book and your actions could alter the course of history in the world. Watching that video and considering the level of RP on games with graphics is fucking cringeworthy in comparison.

:P

You're probably right.  Have never played a MUD myself, which is kinda shameful.  Imagination!

But roleplaying even with the graphics and music and whatever can be a lot of fun.  Haven't figured out how to get it going in WoW yet, though.  Forgot this game was like a single player experience until you reached a certain point (level 10?).  Like people are so antisocial they're even afraid to talk to someone over the internet.  Makes it a bit of a drag to play.  Walk up to a person, /wave; and they run off to go do more solo stuff.  And they keep dumbing the game down, jeez.  Each time I decide to give WoW another chance they've changed some mechanics to be simpler.  This time I found you don't have to return to your class trainers anymore to get your new spells.  They just show up once you level.

Anyway.  Level 9 night elf mage on Emerald Dream, trying to figure out how to RP in this lame solo game.

Dungeon finder ruined the main reason to be social in WoW.  They definitely ruined the game by making it so noob friendly.  If you can even call it that.. more like they simplified it so it takes no time to do anything.  Noobs can't really tell but if you played back in the day you can feel the cheapness.

I remember feeling so accomplished just being able to afford a mount in vanilla.. at level 40.  Now you basically get a free one at lvl 20.

On topic.. I had a friend who used to RP on WC3.   Sounded kinda lame lol.

Yep, 100 gold for the level 40 slow mount haha.  I couldn't even afford it once I hit 40 and had to farm some.  Battlegrounds kind of ruined world PvP, too.  Now I'm trying to level in battlegrounds, which is sort of a thing now.  It's really slow though compared to PvE.

Yeah.  Trying to level exclusively in Warsong Gulch and the resources BG leaves me a horrible empty feeling inside.  The way to play this game is to start with friends and play together I think.  Does anyone want to join me?  Emerald Dream server, RP-PvP.

Woo I did it!  Fairly positive that no one cares other than me, but I'm gonna write about it anyway :P

Managed to roleplay with a few people.  Spent a lot of time in the Silvermoon inn (went blood elf this time), and tried to talk to some who were RPing.  They put guild banner things down and didn't respond to me, so I'm pretty sure they were doing the "closed" roleplay thing with just their guild.  Sat and listened to lots of that between BGs, and then this group of people started talking about me.  Said I was maybe crazy or something because I was just sitting there silently.  That got us going.

I found out a lot about their characters.  This tauren monk was like some kinda pacifst and that was cool; and this undead warlock lady explained her love of dark magic, going into some detail about her personality and the way her mind works.  Like in a fun subtle way?  The undead lady was lots cooler tbh, and I discovered that I'm a better roleplayer than some other people!

Guess there's some RP add-on that allows you to pick surnames for your characters, and write like biographies that other people can read to get a better feel for how to interact with you.  I haven't decided on what my character's history or personality should be yet.  Blood elf holy paladin, does a lot of Alliance-slaying... kinda want to be friendly though.  Don't know too much about blood elf paladins lol.

So yeah.  Roleplay!

I'm having way too much fun doing this.  Figured out that this inn in Silvermoon is the place to hang out if you want to roleplay with randoms.  Guess the RP crowd is into elves, go figure.  Some people roleplay as bartenders and actually hand out drinks.  Think we're supposed to pay them, but I'm level 11 and trying (mostly failing) to level through BGs.  So I'm broke as hell.

And it's great when "non-RPers" try to fuck with you.  Imagine it pisses some of the roleplay crowd off but I think it's hilarious.

Tonight I was chatting with a deathknight who had a lot to say about religion, was fun.

"I may be a deathknight, but I am still a staunch believer in the Light!"

"Is that so?  I don't know much about deathknights myself, but that seems almost contradictory."

*rubs his temples* "Let's just say that work for the Bronze Dragonflight has made for some unique opportunities..."

Then some undead guy spamming his jump button runs up to us and is like "ayyyyyyyyy lmao!"

"ima fuckin wizard or sumshit, gimme a beer!"

And people are all like, "This person is very rude!  How uncouth!"

and i'm laughing at my computer.  oh man, this is my life :(

Fun fact: most roleplayers can't spell.  This guy just said, "I need to make my presants scarce," and faded away.

Sign up again and play with me.  I think they let everyone play all the classes and races and stuff now.  And we can spend hours sitting in Silvermoon roleplaying!
