Smart Cards
« on: October 12, 2014, 05:55:54 am »
I have this smart card that I would like to read/write to/from.  The part of the card looks just like the one in the lower left of this image.

I bought a cheap smart card reader/writer(it's actually a multi reader/write, SIM card, MICRO SIM, USB, M2?, MS, SD) and I am having trouble getting it to even read.  When I plug it into a USB port(I've tried different ones) my PC recognizes it and installs the drivers.  When I plug in a USB flash drive or a micro SD card, my PC recognizes them and will load the storage media.  However, when I plug in this smart card, nothing happens except the little light on the reader will change, indicating that it's reading.

I was reading about it and found out that I may need some middleware.  So I found a small program and installed it.  The program recognizes the reader(I ran the program with the reader unplugged and ran it with the reader plugged in), but nothing happens when I plug in my smart card.

Here's a picture showing what the program shows when I have it running and I have the smart card plugged in...

I have nothing to add, but you've reminded me I need to read about how a SIM stores data. given the low volume, you may be able to just access the device in RAW mode and decode the data...

It doesn't seem to detect the card at all.  It does detect SIM cards, USB flash drives, micro SIM cards, just not the smart card.

I'm wondering if it's a security thing.  Maybe it's flipped on the smart card I have to throw people off.

in all of those above images, you can see that the top-right terminal is connected to the middle section (ground?) - is yours laid out the same way? if not, you might be right in needing to rotate it to be read correctly.

Mine is the same.  Maybe it's the reader I bought, it was cheap...

After reading through some of the negative reviews I think it may be the reader.
