know what would be more fun?  hacking gift cards and preloading them for free.  but i dont know how to do that.

From what I know, you would have to actually hack into the database that activates the gift cards.  I'm not sure if it's the stores database, or if there is another company that deals with it, but I believe I have read that there is another company that deals with it.

I have noticed that the numbers on the back of gift cards are all similar in a way, which leads me to believe that there is another company that activates and handles the gift cards for the stores.

Can't. The data for how much is on the card isn't on the card's data. It's in an account at the card issuer's site. The data included on the card is merely the card's number. Until it is activated with the issuer and a balance is put on it, they're completely worthless.

Now, since you can read and write, get a duplicate non-activated card and flash the activated card's information to it. Use it somewhere other than where you picked up the card. Preference for a first use would be at McDonald's to buy lunch. You can swipe the card yourself at the register and never show it to the cashier. If it doesn't work, simply pull out a different card or cash.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

Here is a much better Idea: get a real credit card, pass me the info and I use it thousands of miles outside of the USA. Once you get the statement, you call it in as fraud. It gets written off as fraud and you are not liable for absolutely anything. We split the profit.

The problem with this, is that I can't seem to write to certain card without getting an error, Walmart cards specifically.  However, I can write the data to other cards, and then use those cards.  So it'll work, but a person has to use a self checkout because the barcode on the back of the Walmart cards has to be scanned when they are being used.

Other cards, I am not sure about the process when they are used, but I do know that sometimes I can't just slide the card myself, I have to actually give it to the cashier.  So, I need to find out why some of these cards can't be written to.  I could always just print them out myself though...

Worst case you can usually just cash them out at ATMs or IRL shops if online sites won't accept so you don't lose much money.
