Chromebooks
« on: September 25, 2014, 01:53:26 am »
Who here is reppin' ChromeOS? I bought my Acer C720 on groupon last month and it's been my main computing device since then. It's lightweight, has a solid 6-8 hrs of battery life and serves as a great mobile computing solution when you need a full keyboard to write out a document or do other simple tasks. I keep my higher spec'd windows lappy at home now as my desktop basically and just use the chromebook for anything else. I've installed ubuntu with xfce but I haven't used it much yet, probably will install steam soon.

I got a chromebook for next to nothing with a bad screen, replaced it, and I was going to sell it but I liked it so much I kept it around.

still probably going to sell it, but its a great little computer

Chromebooks are way too limiting. No Microsoft office available, the make you use their shitty Google drive service. If you just want it for rudimentary stuff it'll be fine though.

I had a chromebook for a while, it was a reasonable little thing. I still have it actually, but never use it anymore now that I have a MBP. The processor was a bit underpowered for my taste, I would have traded an hour of battery life for zippier compile times but it's not really what the thing's designed for so I can't really complain. If I couldn't afford my current computer I'd probably use a chromebook again.

ChromeOS is kinda dumb though, I installed crouton after like a week. I think the market of people who would be happy with it is pretty small, but IDK, google certainly has done more market research than me. I mean it was well designed in and of itself, Chromium is a very nice piece of software. But if NaCl is all you have for native execution, and even that's sandboxed to the point you're still limited by the chrome APIs, then I just it just doesn't make sense as a platform for most developers who aren't already doing webapps (which means no exclusivity, which means a much harder battle for adoption).

They're shit, same with a MBP. Get a Thinkpad or Latitude.

Try getting your own opinions m8. MPBs have superior build quality and aesthetics. "whaaaa, the priiiceeeeee" :jerkoff:. Not all of us are poorfags who can't afford a little luxury in a computer, esp. those of us who make a living out of same.

My T530 cost roughly the same as a MBP and has vastly better quality. MBP has a butter soft aluminum chassis, mediocre keyboard, glossy screen and all proprietary components. T530 has a magnesium roll cage, the best keyboard on the market, anti-glare FHD IPS display, and all standard, easily replaceable components. I can also install a real OS (Linux) without having to fuck around with bootcamp.

Studies have shown that approximately 100% of MBP users are hipsters. I used to think you were moderately intelligent Lanny, but now I can see that you're just a whiny poser.

>chassis
My MBP chassis has 0 damage on it and looks like aluminium sex, thinkpads look like plastic shit. It could be made out of platinum smithed by blind tibetan children for all I care, it's still an eyesore

>mediocre keyboard
from a thinkpad user lol. Your KB's spacing is off and the caps gloss like a motherfucker. The clit is archaic and a pain in the ass. Your touchpad is shit next to the multitouch master race

>glare
maybe that's true, I've never had glare issues because I've never had to use my laptop in lighting conditions where it's an issue. If you really care about being able to use your computer in direct sunlight it might make a difference. It doesn't to me. Meanwhile your resolution is for this, which actually does make a big difference to me (and just about everyone for that matter).

lol

>install a real OS
OSX is a legitimately excellent dev environment, both from experience and empirically by developer choice of equipment. I can also install windows and linux OSs if I want trivially. It's everyone else who has to fuck around with hackintosh

Do the newer thinkpads still have the good keyboard?

I'm on a T420 and my hands have never been happier.
I have to disagree with you Lanny on the clit mouse point - I can't imagine going back to using a mouse or a trackpad. Too much distraction. And the components really are easily replaceable. I used to work in tech support years ago and anything besides the ram and hdd was a pain in the ass to touch whereas I can get the keyboard out of my t420 in under a minute (helped when I had a spill).

I've looked at chromebooks due to their low price (google subsidy yay) but found that only their battery life is something of a plus, although I get 4-6 hours on my regular 6cell here. On the downside, I doubt their keyboard is as good as mine on the t420 and while it probably doesn't change anything for 90% of people, I type a lot and prefer the extra comfort.
