Anyone backpacked ? advice?
« on: September 14, 2014, 03:58:11 am »
Looking at backpacking through Europe next year. Any tips, times of year, good places to go, and all that kind of stuff.

Personal stories would be great!

Not through Europe.

A budget Lonely Planet book is always helpful for those times you rock up in a town after being on a bus all day and have no idea where to go/stay.

Yeah I've just bought a couple of guides. The endless options seem a bit daunting.

Where have you been?

Yeah, the choices can be a bit confusing, but just find one in your price range and go for it. Even if the place isn't dirt cheap I'll spend a night if I'm feeling lazy and go find somewhere cheaper the next day.

I've personally been backpacking through SE Asia (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam). Honestly think I might go there again for a holiday in a few months. I might be able to remain on my student benefits for 6 weeks while overseas, which would be enough to fund a trip apart from plane tickets.

Nice! What in particular drew you to SE Asia?

I'm Australian, so it's close. It's also cheap as fuck and has lots of cool shit to see and do. There was a few posts back on totse and a great thread on zoklet that initially got me interested.

Cheers mate, I'm Aussie too. I've had quite a few mates go to Thailand, Vietnam and Laos and had a great time. I love the food, but apart from that I don't know what else there would appeal to me.

Man, there's heaps of shit to do. Even just cruising around on a motorbike and checking out the surroundings is fun.

I went to Vietnam last year with no clue as to what the country had to offer and it ended up being one of the funnest trips I've had.

Funny, I met an Australian traveling around Europe when I was hiking in Ireland.

Generally anything east of Germany will be extremely cheap. Avoid Ukraine and Belarus. People in Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Rep. Slovakia, Slovenia will be very friendly and will be looking forward to drinking with you. Go in the warmer months instead of the colder - snow not only means wet and cold, but also transportation problems in some regions, which always suck. Pack light and usually things you don't mind getting stolen. Have copies of your passport, documents in a dropbox account in an encrypted archive - they wont get you past border guards, but it'll be easier to get new documents at your embassy if you have those copies. Check out couchsurfing here - my buddy has had lots of luck with it in Poland and Germany, but not much luck in Sweden, but you as an exotic foreigner might have it easier and it'll save you a good deal of money.  When you have a plan, try to memorize some easy convos in the languages in the countries you will visit - things like thank you, hello, etc. Many young people will know english quite well, but old people (people who usually sell tickets etc) won't know a word. Have paper and pen on you at all times.

As far as the fun part goes, I can't really say where you should go - it doesn't really matter to be honest. As long as you pick a few locations, you will have a blast. Eat the local food, make friends with the locals, check out local attractions, go to clubs. This is where couchsurfing really shines as you'll be able to see how people live somewhere else  plus these people will point you to the best places to get food, have fun and will often take you out for fun (not pay for you, just take you clubbing for example).

I haven't done backpacking to be exact, but I've lived here and there in Europe and visit friends there every so often and use the chance to travel a bit. If you have questions about Poland, ask away as I'm pretty good on that area.

Bring a magnifying glass... very handy for lighting camp fires during sunny days. Bring a compass, too. Fishing line and hooks. A small coffee pot. A small radio. A rifle and ammo. Bug lotion. A hand trowel. A small kayak w/backstrap could come in very handy.

Not that kind of backpacking, budget travel

I usually keep my money separate from my wallet. In poorer countries where street hustlers heckle you every couple of meters it pays to have an empty wallet that you can flash around. As soon as they see an empty wallet they scatter and don't want anything to do with you.
