mechanic or breakers special?

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/4745030470.html

this has the 2.7 biturbo motor (known to be a grenade) with the automatic transmission (known to be slaughtered by the 2.7)

but 3k is DIRT CHEAP for this thing. unfortunately it looks like I can't just stick a cheap craigslist 01A in it with junk yard peripherals.

an auto box is probably $4000 ordered through Audi, or $150 at the U-Pull-it for one in unknown condition.

I think I would break this and sell it off for parts, what do you guys think?

I knew a guy back on zoklet that took an A6 with the same motor and swapped in a 6 speed manual. That car wound up failing. Those Audis are such nice cars, shame they're also really shitty too.

Buy it, take it apart, build a sleeper Passat? :p

a 01E (6 speed) swap is fairly involved, you have to replace the rear diff as well as axles, shit like that.

I would be up for the challenge if I had a place to work on it.

the 2.7 is a classic audi conundrum. terrific performance, terrible reliability. its fun as an enthusiast car, would NOT attempt to DD one.
