Just tried to buy a gift card

at Kroger, and the register lady, who I sort of know,  said 'be ready to show your id'.  I asked her why, and she said something about how the register prompts them to check the purchasers id when buying certain gift cards.  She also said it was something to 'protect consumers'.

I don't see how this does anything to protect anyone, or how it does anything to prevent fraud.  Anyone else had this happen recently?

then tell her she cant have your PI because its none of her business, unnecessary to complete the transaction, and basically because you dont want to give it to her

Were you trying to purchase it with a debit card or with cash?  I think they just want to check to make sure the debit card isn't stolen.  Next time go to an ATM, withdraw cash and use the cash to buy the gift card.
