Σ's Hand Wrap guide for fighting

This is a guide for wrapping your hands for boxing or any type of exercise involving hitting your hand against anything. The benefit to wraping your hands is that it keeps the wrist stable and provides protection to the bare skin while hitting a bag. Even if you are using gloves these wraps can help you avoid injury to the wrists.

I opt for the 180 cm mexi wraps so that I can get extra support for my wrist and palm so if you choose to go with the shorter length wraps you will have to cut down the following steps by half:

It is important to keep you wrist and hand as straight as possible while you are wrapping them up.

1. Most wraps have a thumb loop the loop should go over the thumb so that the wrap is going across the top of your hand/wrist and dangling off the other side of your arm. If your wraps do not have thumb loops or you chose to use gauze instead of traditional wraps it will be a little more difficult but not impossible to get your wraps set up like this.

2. Begin by wrapping around the wrist three times staying below the thumb. You should have a taught enough base layer to stabilize the wrist without cutting off circulation. You may have to experiment a couple times with how tight works for you.

3. After the third wrap around the wrist bring it under the palm and above the thumb.

4. Do three semi-loose wraps around the knuckles. Keep it taught but not very.

5. Wrap the webbing of your fingers starting between the index and middle finger and ending at the pinky. Keep the wrap below the thumb.

6. when you finish crossing through the fingers bring the wrap over the wrist and around to above the thumb.

7. Then begin wrapping over the knuckles again three times.

7.1 if you are using Mexican wraps like i am then after wrapping around the knuckles start alternating the wrap between the wrist and palm a few times.

8. After wrapping the knuckles three times bring the wrap over the wrist and finish wrapping approximately three more times around the wrist to keep it securely stabilized.

9.Velcro or tuck and you are ready to throw some punches.

Fuck that noise, I'm old school I always use the gauze, starting with wrapping it around the hand itself (or rarely the actual wrist), it's better than the thumb loop nonsense
Just like totse, you show up one day to find everything has gone to shit a week before

yeah I'm gonna have to agree with this the gauze/bandage route was always a lot more comfortable for me it never felt as bulky in between the fingers.

also that particular wrap looks like a little too much for the size of your hand also the spacing in between your index and middle finger is a tad wide just looks like it would be uncomfortable after any long session once your hands start getting sweaty

as an addendum: you want to have your wrap in such a way that keeping a strong fist isn't necessarily an conscious effort if you fight against your wrap to keep your fist tight you'll end up tiring your hands quicker and be more prone to opening your fist which can be a big cause of glass hands

What i like about gauze/bandage was the fact that it fit into my knuckles better.  The thicker, cotton wraps with the thumb hook were always too thick and stiff

Dis nigga nose how 2 wrap hands

From the pictures it looks like you doubled over the top an extra time from what I've been shown/done before but I guess if you've got some left over that's where it should go

From the pictures it looks like you doubled over the top an extra time from what I've been shown/done before but I guess if you've got some left over that's where it should go

I use the 180 cm mexi wraps so they are longer than normal wraps. I use the long wraps because I like how secure my wrist feels and they are what I know. Regular sized wraps or gauze will not have the "left overs" so to speak.

The theory is that it stabilizes the metacarpals by increasing the pressure on them when the fist is balled; reducing the ability of the bones and ligaments to flex upon impact by binding them (this is the overall function of the entire wrap) reduces the likelyhood they will fracture or rupture. It also allows for easier muscular contraction, i.e. stiffening, of the upper body muscles involved in transferring energy produced by torsion of the body, through the arm and into the target due to them having something to resist against; if you're punching technique is correct though, this isn't necessary. I would say it's potentially detrimental in that it can encourage poor technique for a beginner.

The wraps primary functions should be support the wrist, prevent damage to the knuckles and protect the body of the fifth metacarpal (boxer's fracture). Variations on wrapping style can be used to accomodate personal needs/preferences.

it's important to have a wrap that fits your hand really well because as SOTB said it can lead to bad habits just because you wrap doesn't mean you can be lax with your technique another reason I prefer bandage and gauze it just simply enforces the wrist without really getting in the way of holding a solid fist
